Qualcomm Reveals Snapdragon XR2+ Gen 2 That Will Debut On a Device Made by Samsung and Google

Qualcomm has lifted the curtains off the Snapdragon XR2+ Gen 2, and while the name is mouthful, we will try to make it easier for you going forward. For those wondering, the new chipset is going to provide 4.3K per eye resolution, and it will go as high as 90 frames per second. Qualcomm is confident and talks about how it will deliver  “spectacularly clear visuals” in multiple scenarios such as massive screens, life-size overlays, as well as virtual desktops.

Qualcomm, Google, and Samsung are teaming up to give Snapdragon XR2+ Gen 2 the primetime it deserves

In addition, the Snapdragon XR2+ Gen 2 brings a 15% increase in GPU frequency and a 20% increase in CPU frequency. You will also have support for 12+ concurrent cameras that will assist with hand and other body tracking.

The Snapdragon XR2+ Gen 2 will also offer 12ms full-color video see-through and Wi-Fi 7 support - these specs are the same as the previous XR2 Gen 2. It is worth noting that the new chipset is made for XR use cases.

Qualcomm has also mentioned how the company is currently working with Google and Samsung to develop a new product that will be based on the Snapdragon XR2+ Gen 2. As far as what it is going to be, we are still not sure, but here are some points that the company has made.

“Samsung is thrilled to collaborate with Qualcomm Technologies and Google in revolutionizing the mobile industry once more.” Inkang Song, vice president and head of technology strategy team at Samsung Electronics, expressed his excitement, “With Samsung’s mobile expertise and our joint commitment, we aim to create the best-in-class XR experience for Galaxy users.”

“We look forward to continuing our collaboration with Qualcomm Technologies and Samsung on the future of immersive and spatial XR,” said Shahram Izadi, vice president of AR at Google. “We’re excited for the Android ecosystem to take advantage of Snapdragon XR2+ Gen 2’s capabilities and enable new experiences.”

In addition to that, Qualcomm has also talked about how there are five other OEMs that are currently working on creating devices that will benefit from the Snapdragon XR2+ Gen 2. This includes the Samsung and Google headsets, and there will also be the HTC Vice, Immersed, and Play for Dream. This means that we are going to see many really impressive devices going forward.

I am not too sure about the future of extended reality, but if companies like Qualcomm, Samsung, Google, and even Apple are taking it seriously, then it is safe to say that there is a place for all of that. However, it will take some time before the technology becomes perfect and is available for the mainstream market. Whatever the case might be, I am really looking forward to all the devices powered by the Snapdragon XR+ Gen 2, and I am hoping that we get to see it in all of its glory once the products start rolling out.
