Qualcomm was previously rumored to be making adjustments to its upcoming Snapdragon 8 Gen 4, raising its clock speed to as high as 4.26GHz. It is possible that Apple’s M4 may have forced the San Diego firm to re-evaluate its position on its flagship chipset’s current performance limitations. One tipster now claims that the performance cores operate at 4.20GHz, allowing the Snapdragon 8 Gen 4 prototype to obtain a multi-core score of 10,000 points, with other details also mentioned.
New multi-core performance puts the Snapdragon 8 Gen 4 above Apple’s A17 Pro and only just manages to edge past it in single-core results
With the Snapdragon 8 Gen 4 expected to be officially announced in October, Qualcomm has a few months of tweaking left. On Weibo, Digital Chat Station states that the clock speed increase gives the upcoming silicon a massive bump in single-core and multi-core performance. Geekbench 6 was likely the benchmark application of choice, with the Snapdragon 8 Gen 4 rumored to have achieved 3,000 and 10,000 points in both single-core and multi-core runs. Compared to the A17 Pro, Qualcomm’s upcoming flagship SoC is faster in both categories, though it maintains a higher lead in the multi-threaded category.
However, before we get excited about these results, the tipster mentioned that these are laboratory tests, meaning that the results were probably obtained in a controlled environment. This means that the impressive single-core and multi-core gains may not be representative of real-world performance, and depending on the surrounding temperature, those scores can deviate significantly. We are also unaware of the Snapdragon 8 Gen 4’s power consumption, as this information was conveniently left out from the latest rumor.
Fortunately, Digital Chat Station has mentioned previously that the Snapdragon 8 Gen 4 will power future Android flagships with massive battery capacities of 5,500mAh, implying that the chipset will have a higher power draw due to the increased clock speeds. It is unconfirmed if Qualcomm will stick with these frequencies with the commercial variants of the Snapdragon 8 Gen 4, so it is best to treat this rumor with a pinch of salt, and we will be back with more updates.
