Apple introduced strict differentiation with its iPhone 15 series when it announced the A17 Pro for its higher-end iPhone 15 Pro and iPhone 15 Pro Max. From the looks of it, Qualcomm is rumored to adopt the same strategy as its chipset rival, as a rumor claims that the company is developing next year’s Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 6 in not one, but two versions, with the more premium variant recognized by the ‘Pro’ moniker. As expected, the more powerful SoC is allegedly set to arrive with exclusive features, including LPDDR6 RAM support and varying GPU specifications.
Qualcomm’s third-generation Oryon architecture will adopt a new CPU cluster for the Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 6, but will maintain the same number of performance cores
Once more, Weibo tipster Digital Chat Station has returned, claiming that the Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 6 will be mass-produced on TSMC’s superior 2nm N2P architecture instead of the N2 node. However, this is not the first time he has mentioned it, as on a previous occasion, he stated that the chipset would obtain LPDDR6 RAM and UFS 5.0 storage support. While another tipster believes that all SoCs from Apple, Qualcomm, and MediaTek will utilize TSMC’s N2 node in 2026, even foreign media outlets believe that the iPhone maker’s competition is stepping up their game by moving to an improved lithography.
Now, here comes the twist: instead of a single Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 6, the rumor claims that Qualcomm is developing two versions, though both of them are expected to feature a ‘2 + 3 + 3’ CPU cluster. This configuration is different from the ‘2 + 6’ cluster adopted by the Snapdragon 8 Elite and Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 5, and we guess that the last three cores will be ultra-low-power ones to maintain some efficiency. The two differences separating the standard Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 6 and the ‘Pro’ variant are that the latter will be treated to LPDDR6 and varying GPU specifications.
This means that the regular version could be limited to LPDDR5X RAM and an underclocked graphics processor. Sadly, the majority of the details are kept in the dark, which is unsurprising, given that the Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 5’s inception happened in late September. The last part of the tipster’s Weibo post says that, in the presentation slides he allegedly saw, the ‘Pro’ version’s performance specifications were impressive. Then again, as mentioned earlier, it is too early to take these claims seriously, so we will continue to wait for further updates.
