The volunteer team behind Skywind, the ambitious fan-made recreation of The Elder Scrolls III: Morrowind in Skyrim's engine, has released a new 33-minute development update video titled "Skywind 2026: The Road Continued". It's the first full-fledged developer update since 2024, and followers of this total conversion mod will be happy to learn that the numbers suggest the project is closer to completion than ever before.

All of Skywind's approximately 3,000 NPCs have now been fully cast, a feat accomplished with the help of nearly 300 volunteer voice actors. Over 92% of those NPCs are fully recorded, meaning the voice acting pipeline, historically one of the most labor-intensive aspects of a project this size, is nearly complete.

On the writing side, all base game quests are fully written, finalized, and currently undergoing implementation into the game. The 2D and Writing departments have wrapped all essential tasks for the entire base game and are already planning ahead for future DLCs (which will not be part of the initial release). The Level Design team has also made significant progress, bringing 10 of 13 exterior world regions to 90%-100% completion. On the 3D side, 28 of 30 level kits — the asset collections used to construct specific locations — are finished, with the remaining two well underway.

According to the team, all the core Morrowind mechanics are now fully implemented in Skywind, including the complete character class system and traps that can be disarmed using classic probes. The animation team is working on the final custom creature rig, and underwater combat has seen significant evolution.

On the audio front, the Skywind OST now contains over 130 original tracks. Visually, the weather VFX system has been overhauled using real-world lighting data and custom sky textures, representing a notable technical leap for what, at its core, is a fan project running on a 15-year-old engine.

Despite the remarkable progress, Skywind remains a volunteer-driven project with no set release date, and the team is actively recruiting contributors in several key areas:

Skywind's sister project, Skyblivion, remains closer to release. It was supposed to launch last year but got delayed until 2026, though we don't know exactly when it will be available.
