SK Hynix has taken matters into its own hands to solve the HBM memory crisis by building a new production facility called "P&T7".
SK Hynix's "P&T7" Facility Will Be Constructed By 2027, and All Production Lines Will Commence By 2028
Being built at the Cheongju Technopolis Industrial Complex, the P&T7 facility will take the key role in addressing the AI memory crisis, fulfilling the demand for HBM DRAM while also enabling WLP (Wafer-Level Packaging) lines.
The announcement comes from SK Hynix in the form of a groundbreaking ceremony where 125 executives and employees took part.
In his opening remarks, Byeonggi Lee, Head of Manufacturing at SK hynix, said, “P&T7 is the core production base that will complete SK hynix’s AI memory leadership. We will focus our manufacturing capabilities to ensure that the advanced products manufactured here set the standard for global AI infrastructure, while closely engaging with the local community to build a successful business model that captures both national industrial competitiveness and shared growth with the region.”

Some of the key highlights of the SK Hynix P&T7 advanced packaging fab are that it will be used for manufacturing crucial AI memory products, such as HBM. The company has invested huge pools of cash to ensure that the facility becomes operational soon. The WT line targets a completion by October 2027, while the WLP line is expected to be completed by February 2028.
The PT&7 facility will be massive in scale. It will cover an area of 230,000㎡ , which is the size of 32-40 soccer fields, and will house three floors for the WLP (Wafer-Layer Packaging) process lines, spanning 60,000㎡, & seven floors for the WT (Wafer Test) lines, spanning 90,000㎡ .
To construct this facility, an average of 320 workers will be on site per day, and up to 9000 during peak times. After construction, the company states that 3000 in-house personnel will be stationed at PT&7. The project will also add to the local economy of the country and will elevate the surroundings by driving the expansion of nearby infrastructure, such as transportation networks. These are said to improve the living conditions of local residents.
The announcement of PT&7 comes at a time when industry insiders are further enhancing the position of SK Hynix against competitors such as Samsung.
SK Hynix is said to be leading the development and also the production of bleeding-edge HBM designs, while Samsung is reportedly pushing back production after failing to achieve yields. The new SK Hynix facility will not just ensure improved supply to meet the AI demand, but also faster deployment of next-gen HBM technologies.
