During the announced Xbox Special Look broadcast, SEGA and RGG Studio revealed plenty of new details about Stranger Than Heaven, their upcoming new intellectual property. First of all, the game is targeting a Winter 2026 launch on Xbox Game Pass, Xbox Series X|S, Xbox on PC, Xbox Cloud Gaming, Steam, and PlayStation 5.
Stranger Than Heaven is set up as a sprawling, multi-generational saga spanning 50 years of Japanese history, from 1915 to 1965. The story begins in 1915 San Francisco, where a young boy named Makoto Daito (born to an American father and Japanese mother; played by actor Yu Shirota) faces racial persecution due to his Asian heritage. After losing both parents, he stows away on a ship bound for Japan, where he encounters Orpheus (played by renowned singer Snoop Dogg), a legendary international smuggler and underworld fixer who becomes his mentor. Orpheus describes himself as "a one-stop shop for any and all contraband", be it weapons, ammunition, gold, or state secrets, and takes pride in always delivering.
Orpheus takes Makoto on as his sidekick, teaching him the harsh realities of underworld life, and during this time, he discovers Makoto's hidden talent for singing. From that discovery, the story expands into a 50-year saga of identity, belonging, friendship, and survival, described as far more than a story about crime or ambition like the usual Yakuza/Like a Dragon game.
Despite Makoto's singing talent, his true calling swiftly reveals itself as a showman: a producer and manager who builds performances for other artists rather than performing himself. Stranger Than Heaven features a specific 'showbiz gameplay loop', which involves:
- Sound collection — Makoto memorizes sounds from across each city: street bustle, animal calls, a neighbor's snoring, the grunts of enemies mid-combat, distant train rumbles. Sounds vary by era, location, and time of day.
- Composition — By collaborating with composers, Makoto combines collected sounds into original musical tracks.
- Show production — He scouts singers and performers, chooses the setlist, arranges the band, assigns a cast, and designs the full production.
- Touring — As shows succeed, Makoto earns money and builds his rags-to-riches reputation as a master showman across Japan.
Of course, it wouldn't be a new game from RGG Studio if it didn't have a full-fledged combat system. Stranger Than Heaven's combat system emphasizes independent left/right body control, with players moving Makoto's two sides separately for attacks and defense:
- Chain jabs into crushing blows, charged attacks, tackle staggered enemies, or pin them down for a flurry of punches
- Block with one hand and instantly counter with the other
- Master and upgrade a wide array of weapons: knives, hammers, katanas, and more
The plot will unfold over five eras and five cities: 1915 Fukuoka, 1929 Hiroshima, 1943 Osaka, 1951 Shizuoka, and 1965 Tokyo.
Stranger Than Heaven certainly sounds like a fairly noteworthy departure from usual RGG fare. We'll keep an eye on further news and reveals as we get closer to its release date.
