Samsung is now feeling the heat as Apple pulls out all of its guns for the upcoming iPhone Fold, and is accordingly preparing to imbue the Galaxy Z Fold 8 with a near-flawless, crease-free look by leveraging novel display tech.
Samsung to use Ultra-Thin Glass (UTG) on the top and bottom display layers of the Galaxy Z Fold 8
According to South Korea's DealSite, Samsung is likely to apply Ultra-Thin Glass (UTG) on the top and bottom layers of the display for the Galaxy Z Fold 8 as it aims to reduce the dreaded crease by at least 20 percent.
Of course, Samsung showcased a crease-free display panel at the recently concluded CES 2026. According to industry sources, the exhibited display leverages an optimized laminate structure, improved light dispersion, and a metal plate that sits just beneath the foldable OLED panel, with the laser-drilled perforations within the plate serving to distribute the overall pressure in a slightly different manner each time the display is folded. This prevents a concentration of pressure along the hinge, nearly eliminating the dreaded crease in the process.
According to the South Korean publication, Samsung is quite likely to leverage UTG for the upcoming Galaxy Z Fold 8 as the glass-based material is cheaper than some of the other novel materials and can be procured fairly easily.
Also, Samsung is expected to deliver a different panel to Apple for the iPhone Fold than the one that will be used within its next-gen foldables, especially as "it is difficult to achieve [a crease-free look] using only the patents that Apple holds," as per the views expressed by an industry insider.
Even so, one should credit Apple for driving the industry towards trying to achieve a crease-free look rather than churning out iteration after iteration of fairly generic foldables with the ugly crease marring the look and feel of the display panels.
