Smartphone cameras have come a long way, and two companies that are responsible for it are Samsung and Sony. Both companies have worked tirelessly to deliver some of the best sensors in the market. Now, if a new report is to be believed, the South Korean giant is taking the fight to its Japanese competitor as the company is looking into developing a sensor that will feature on-sensor AI, which might not make sense at the moment but could revolutionize smartphone photography forever.

Samsung's on-sensor AI can revolutionize smartphone photography forever

According to a new report, Samsung is currently working on bringing AI into its camera sensors. If you remember, the company announced Zoom Anyplace technology, which basically uses AI, and at the time of writing, the South Korean giant is currently working on bringing more AI features to its camera sensors. Of course, we are not going to see the change right away, and the Galaxy S24 series is unlikely to feature this sensor since the company is still trying to figure out a way to make that happen, but this does serve as good news.

SK Hynix revealed during its 2023 event how it will work on integrating AI processing chips into the camera sensors. The technology will allow for reduced latency, improve image quality, and reduce power consumption. Many features are being tested at the moment, including face and object recognition. It is safe to say that Samsung and SK Hynix are trying to devise ways to put AI at the center of their products and services.

There is no denying that the race for AI is actually taking place, and the more we move forward, the more advancements we will see from various companies. I am glad that Samsung and SK Hynix are trying to catch up with Sony, and this is a great start for Sony to start looking into such technology, as well.

At the time of writing, I honestly cannot see a lot of use of on-sensor AI regardless of who reaches their first, but it does look like a fascinating technology, and I cannot wait to see more and how it works down the road.
