Apple is often criticized for taking years to adopt certain technologies that its competitors have transitioned to for the longest time. For instance, the company’s M6 MacBook Pro is expected to be the first portable Mac to feature an OLED panel, making it a significant step-up from the mini-LED screens present on current models. However, supply chain partners like Samsung are also culpable in this act, and according to the latest report, the Korean manufacturer is expected to procure some crucial equipment in Q4 2026, which will be pivotal for the OLED M6 MacBook Pro launch.
Samsung likely did not go through with purchasing the LTPO equipment for the M6 MacBook Pro due to a lack of profitability and increased production costs
A report from ETNews talks about introducing LTPO thin-film transistors to its 8.6-generation OLED production line. For its plan to reach fruition, it needs to procure specialized equipment and is currently in negotiation to acquire the necessary paraphernalia. An individual familiar with the matter has not mentioned the dollar amount that Samsung needs to part with to purchase this equipment, but the report says that the initial target is the fourth quarter of 2026.
Now, here is where things get interesting; according to a unique identifier code leak, Apple is developing a 14-inch M6 MacBook Pro that does not feature an OLED, meaning that it may not feature a redesigned chassis or a ‘notchless’ touchscreen with a reinforced hinge that we talked about in a previous report. Perhaps the Cupertino firm wants to be prepared in case Samsung cannot deliver on its promise of mass producing LTPO OLED panels for the next-generation portable Mac.
Also, it is not like Apple can simply hop onto another supply chain and secure OLED panels from those manufacturers because Samsung is the only company that employs an ‘oxide method,’ which is beneficial in lowering manufacturing costs. Additionally, this method does not require ‘ELA or ion implantation equipment,’ negating the need to purchase expensive machinery. Due to this reason, the report suggests that Samsung will be Apple’s exclusive supplier of LTPO TFT OLED panels for the M6 MacBook Pro.
Assuming Samsung receives the necessary equipment by Q4 2026, it will have to set up installation expeditiously if Apple is to offer its redesigned M6 MacBook Pro to customers in the same year. Unfortunately, if certain events transpire that prevent a timely launch schedule, the new Macs can be delayed to early 2027.
