Samsung was originally expected to unveil a successor to the OG Galaxy Ring, aptly called the Galaxy Ring 2, at its 'Galaxy Unpacked' event early next year. However, sluggish sales and an escalating dispute with Oura over alleged instances of patent infringement are now prompting a rethink at Samsung regarding the launch timeline for the Galaxy Ring 2.
Galaxy Ring 2: Muted sales expectations merge with an escalating legal fight with Oura to create a veritable maelstrom for Samsung
While the South Korean behemoth commenced its R&D phase for the Galaxy Ring 2 back in June, industry insiders believe that the smart accessory is still in its development phase and is unlikely to be ready for launch by the time Samsung holds its Galaxy Unpacked event early next year.
What's more, Samsung's escalating legal fight with Oura, the uncontested apex predator in the smart rings sphere, over supposed instances of patent infringement is also giving the South Korean behemoth some pause.
Back in 2024, Oura filed a lawsuit against Ultra Human and Rincon with the United States' International Trade Commission (ITC) for patent infringement, prompting Rincon to enter into a licensing agreement with Oura.
Of course, it appears Samsung was also cognizant of a patent infringement possibility as it had filed a patent non-infringement confirmation lawsuit - one that is intended to legally confirm that a particular party's patent has not been infringed upon - against Oura in May 2024 in a federal court in California ahead of the Galaxy Ring's launch. That lawsuit, however, was summarily dismissed by the court owing to the fact that Oura had not raised any such claims against Samsung at the time.
This then prompted Samsung to file a counter lawsuit against Oura in the US District Court for the Eastern District of Texas on December 01, alleging its own patent infringement claims against Oura and demanding monetary damages.
The situation is clearly coming to a boil, prompting Samsung to rethink its launch strategy for the Galaxy Ring 2, especially as the OG Galaxy Ring has failed to show a strong sales performance.
