Samsung might have a lot of faults, but a lack of innovation is certainly not among those. As a case in point, look no further than the recent SID exhibition in the United States, where Samsung just unveiled two revolutionary display technologies, unlocking a veritable suite of biomarker-led applications in the process.

Samsung's "Flex Chroma Pixel" display combines next-gen emissive materials, such as phosphorescent sensitized fluorescence (PSF), with its proprietary polarizer technology that allows for an efficient high-brightness display, unlocking peak brightness of up to 3,000 nits as well as an industry-leading color gamut that reportedly covers 96 percent of the ITU’s BT.2020 color space standard.

Think of it as an M16 OLED panel - which is expected to debut on the Galaxy S27 Ultra, and swaps out blue fluorescent OLED material for blue phosphorescent material, entailing a meaningful jump in efficiency - on steroids. Of course, by the looks of it, Samsung will likely first debut the "Flex Chroma Pixel" tech on its TVs rather than smartphones.

But the more interesting tech relates to Samsung's new "Sensor OLED," which integrates organic photodiodes (OPD) into the display, allowing for the use of emitted light to measure health metrics such as heart rate and blood pressure.

Samsung showcased its "Sensor OLED" tech within the form factor of a smartphone-sized 6.8-inch panel, indicating that the technology was likely to debut on a future smartphone.

As far as specifics are concerned, Samsung managed to integrate RGB and OPD pixels within a single display layer, unlocking a pixel density of 500 PPI. Interestingly, Samsung envisions using this "Sensor OLED" tech in conjunction with its "Flex Magic Pixel" technology that debuted on the Galaxy S26 Ultra and which limits lateral viewing angles, allowing users to check their blood pressure in a high-privacy environment.
