A few days ago, VESA announced a new standard for the next-gen OLED panels. It's the DisplayHDR True Black 1400 certification, which is aimed at high-end OLED displays that can deliver up to 1,400 nits of peak brightness, delivering superior visual fidelity while maintaining deep black levels as low as 0.0005 nits.

Samsung being the leading OLED producer has now started full-scale supply of its next-gen Tandem OLED panels that meet the DisplayHDR True Black 1400 requirements. The company announced that its new Tandem OLED technology is aimed at laptops that can reach peak brightness of up to a whopping 1,600 nits at the panel level, which is 40% higher than the 1,100-nits of peak brightness of conventional OLED panels.

It's also higher than the requirements set by VESA, and is achieved using a single emissive layer, which is known as single-stack OLED. As of now, Lenovo is the first one to feature a VESA DisplayHDR True Black 1400-certified OLED panel from Samsung on its Yoga Pro 9i Aura Edition laptop that features a 16-inch OLED display. Samsung is also supplying the latest OLED panels to several partners, including ASUS, Dell, and MSI, which should roll out new laptops with True Black 1400-certified OLED displays before the end of this year.

Samsung uses a Tandem OLED architecture in its latest OLED panels, which uses two organic emissive layers for superior light-emitting efficiency and higher brightness. Due to this configuration, the Tandem OLED can achieve a much higher peak brightness than its predecessors using the same current, reducing the load on each emissive layer, which extends the panel's lifespan. That said, Samsung will also showcase the new laptop Tandem OLED panel at K-Display 2026, which will take place at COEX in Seoul from July 22 to 24.
