To tease an upcoming game in such a way is a very strange way to do it, but this is something that Rockstar has done before. It makes perfect sense that Dan Houser would go on to leave Rockstar Games to work on his own title and then tease it in the same way. He has been working on his new title at his own studio, Absurd Ventures, for a couple of years. Thus far, not many details have been released, other than a fever dream video in 2023 and 12 episodes of a narrative podcast to help set the scene for the debut title.
Before this announcement, Dan Houser originally announced two unique pieces of content over a year ago, named American Caper and A Better Paradise. These weren't games but were instead a graphic novel and audio fiction series, respectively.
On Friday, Absurd Ventures finally gave those who were interested a glimpse into what is being named the Absurdaverse, which is artwork that shows off 20 characters that will be making an appearance in the universe. There is a wide range of characters, with there being angsty teens, a man dressed as a magician, and even a Viking. It has that same style that is used in Grand Theft Auto, and also kind of provides a feeling similar to that of the TV show Archer. The artwork came with the caption, "Prepare to meet some new kinds of heroes (and watch them suffer)."
It's said that the new IP will be introduced with "animation projects" that will be released later on this year. Alongside that, the studio is working on an "original story-driven action-comedy adventure game" that will also be taking place in the Absurdaverse, but no further details regarding this project were shared.
Dan Houser co-founded Rockstar in 1998 with his brother Sam Houser and made the decision to leave the company in February 2020 after taking an extended break shortly after the launch of Red Dead Redemption 2. Since its inception, Rockstar Games has gone on to make some of the most iconic titles in gaming, such as Grand Theft Auto, Red Dead Redemption, and other successful titles such as Bully, Manhunt, and L.A. Noire. Before his exit, Dan Houser was the lead writer on both Grand Theft Auto 5 and Red Dead Redemption 2.
After he left, he then announced the opening of his new gaming studio, Absurd Ventures, in 2023, where he plans to "create new IP across all platforms and for all formats."
If the storytelling in Grand Theft Auto is anything to go by, it means that this new Absurdaverse will be equally as wacky and psychedelic as Grand Theft Auto 5 was.
