Team Group T-Force G70 PRO 2 TB Gen4 NVMe SSD Review – High-End With Graphene Heatsink

Jun 15, 2024 at 08:57am EDT

While PCIe Gen 5 NVMe SSDs are setting new storage performance benchmarks, the real-life and application benefits of getting those drives are still not worth the price you are paying for them. It's still very much an early adopter product for now and while we appreciate the speed-up, we would love to see the performance transition from synthetic benchmarks to actual use cases.

And you know what's still considered quite fast without breaking your wallet? The current-gen PCIe Gen 4 NVMe SSDs. Gen 4 SSDs are now available at very affordable prices while offering great performance. TeamGroup is the creator of some of the most high-quality memory products for the PC industry and today, we will be testing their latest T-Force G70 PRO PCIe Gen4 SSD which claims to offer rock-solid and high-end storage performance at a decent value.

T-Force G70 PRO 2 TB PCIe Gen4 NVMe SSD

The T-Force G70 PRO is part of the new "G" series family which is designed for high-end users. The lineup also includes higher-end Gen5 products such as the GA, GC, and GE PRO which offer up to 14 GB/s speeds but that's something that we will be taking a look at in the future. The T-Force G70 PRO SSDs are based on the NVMe SSD form factor and feature TLC-based 3D NAND flash, offering larger capacities of up to 4 TB, better performance, and slightly lower power input.

The SSDs are based on the Innogrit "IG5236CAA" controller which offers increased speeds, doubling of the number of channels, and doubling of IOPS too, all making it a very high-end Gen4 controller, perfect for the likes of the T-Force's "G" series. The drives also come with an added DRAM cache.

FEATURES

  • S.M.A.R.T. software patent
    Taiwan invention patent (No.: I751753)

In terms of performance, the T-Force G70 PRO 2 TB SSD has sequential read speeds of up to 7400 MB/s and write speeds of 6800 MB/s. The drive is based on 128-layer TCL NAND from YMTC & has an endurance of 1480 (TBW) backed by a 5-year warranty.

T-Force G70 PRO 2 TB PCIe Gen4 SSD  – Unboxing and Closer Look

The T-Force G70 PRO 2 TB SSD comes in a standard package. The package is colored black and red plus it features a picture of the SSD itself. The front only lists the 2 TB capacity.

The back of the package lists some specifications of the SSD and some performance figures which we will get to in a bit.

The T-Force G70 PRO SSD package includes a warranty booklet plus a small T-Force sticker and that's about it. The SSD container includes the storage drive and the heatsink.

The front of the SSD has the standard sticker. This is the standard NVMe 1.4 standard & measures 22 x 80 x 3.7mm (LxWxH). With the heatsink installed, its height is increased to 8.7mm

There are two NAND Flash chips, the DRAM module (2 GB DDR4-2400 by Micron), and the InnoGrit Gen4 controller situated on the front while the other two NAND Flash modules along with the 2nd DRAM die are situated on the back of the PCB.

Teamgroup provides its T-Force G70 PRO SSDs with an added heatsink that will work great with desktops while the non-heatsink drive will perfectly fit inside a laptop and Mini PC, where there's not enough room to accommodate a large heatsink.

Without the heatsink, the SSD weighs just 7 grams but with the Graphene heatsink installed, it weights 54 grams.

Test Setup

Our test platform for this review consisted of an Intel Core i9-13900K processor which ran at stock clocks on the MSI Z790 ACE motherboard. The platform was coupled with 32 GB of DDR5 memory from G.Skill (Trident Z5/ 16 GB x 2) and the MSI MEG Ai1300P PSU. For graphics, I used the MSI GeForce RTX 4090 SUPRIM X. This rounds up as a high-end platform for tests with modern-day SSDs.

AS SSD Benchmark

AS SSD Benchmark download is a Windows 10 utility software program that tests the performance of solid-state drives. With its help, you can find out the speed of all installed SSDs and take care of any issues that the tests may reveal. The free app performs three separate tests to provide you with conclusive evidence of your driver's general behavior while it copies, reads, and writes data.  The app determines the access time of an SSD, along with its speed and performance capabilities

PCMark 10 Storage Benchmark

The PCMark 10 Storage benchmark is designed to test the performance of SSDs, HDDs, and hybrid drives with traces recorded from Adobe Creative Suite, Microsoft Office, and a selection of popular games. You can test the system drive or any other recognized storage device, including local external drives. Unlike synthetic storage tests, the PCMark 10 Storage benchmark highlights real-world performance differences between storage devices.

Conclusion - Maxing Out Gen4

Teamgroup's T-Force G70 PRO SSDs are out now and offer up to 4 TB capacities. These SSDs have some of the fastest speeds on the Gen4 segment and feature a graphene heatsink which further contributes to their high-performance capabilities by keeping them running cool. For high-end PCs, it is advisable to use the heatsink of your motherboard or the one bundled with the drive itself as it can run a bit toasty without the heatsink.

As for the performance, well it is right where you'd expect. It's fast and delivers great performance but there's always the Gen5 SSDs if you feel like you're missing out on something then you have to pay extra. The G70 PRO 2 TB retails for $149.99 US while the 1 TB version retails for $89.99 US & these are good prices but we would like to see the higher-capacity variants fall a bit further & those would be a more competitive product in this saturated market.
