CPU Power Consumption Tests
AMD's AM5 platform has been a solid entry, featuring some of the best chips on the market and a wide variety of entry-level and high-end options to select from. Despite the AM5 launch, AMD was still focusing on releasing the more mainstream and budget-tier solutions for the older AM4 socket which still holds the majority share but the company has recently started to launch affordable CPU options in its AM5 segment.
Seeing the success of the AMD Ryzen 7 7800X3D, the follow-up to the much popular Ryzen 7 5800X3D, the company introduced new 5600X3D options for budget gamers. Starting at $199, which was a decent chip but limited to just one retailer. In our review, we saw the Ryzen 5 5600X3D offers great value and gaming efficiency and it looks like AMD is now extending the Ryzen 5 X3D options to AM5.
Meet the AMD Ryzen 5 7600X3D, this is the brand new 3D V-Cache chip on the block which promises some strong gaming potential with Zen 4's solid efficiency figures. The Ryzen 5 7600X3D has a lot more in common with the Ryzen 9 7900X3D just like the Ryzen 7 7800X3D has a lot in common with the Ryzen 9 7950X3D.
The Ryzen 5 features just one CCD and a singular 3D V-Cache stack but being a single CCD design is the best approach towards gaming workloads as the thread scheduler doesn't have to go between the dual CCDs to find the best fit for gaming applications. It's also seen with the Ryzen 7 7800X3D which performs better than Ryzen 9 7950X3D CPUs in gaming workloads.
In terms of specifications, the AMD Ryzen 7600X3D 3D V-Cache CPU features the same 6-core/12-thread count as the 7600X but it has 64 MB more L3 cache, totaling 96 MB. Due to an unusual stacking of 3D V-Cache, the processor features 4.1GHz Base and 4.7GHz Boost clocks, which are lower than its non-X3D counterpart. Nonetheless, the 7600X3D is aimed at gaming workloads on a budget and its increasing availability is a good sign.
Just like the AMD Ryzen 5 5600X3D, Microcenter is the exclusive US-based retailer to offer this chip but there's a slight difference. Other regions also have exclusive outlets with Mindfactory in Germany and JD.com in China. This means that while the Ryzen 5 7600X3D is still limited to certain retailers, it is at least available globally for the same asking price of $299.99 US.
For testing, I used the AMD Ryzen 7 9700X & Ryzen 5 9600X CPUs which were sent to us by AMD. The motherboard used includes the Gigabyte X670E AORUS Xtreme which retains its flagship positioning in the Gigabyte AM5 lineup. Both CPUs were tested with PBO enabled by default.

The AMD Ryzen 9000 CPUs come in the same two or three chiplet configurations as the Ryzen 7000 series with one or two of which are the aforementioned AMD Zen 4 CCDs fabricated on the 4nm process node. Then we have the larger die around the center, the IOD, based on a 6nm process node. The AMD Ryzen 9000 CCD measures a die size of 70.6mm2 and features a total of 8.6 Billion transistors per CCD. The IOD has a die size of 122m2 and features 3.4 billion transistors. The AMD Ryzen 5 7600X3D has a single CCD configured with a singular 3D V-Cache stack & has a maximum operating temperature of 89C.
Scattered around the package are several SMDs (capacitors/resistors) that usually sit under the package substrate if we consider Intel's CPUs. AMD is instead featuring them on the top layer and as such, they had to design a new kind of IHS which is internally referred to as the Octopus.

AMD's Ryzen 9000 Desktop CPUs utilize a brand new Zen 5 core architecture that is built on the 4nm process node as such, these chips are designed to be extremely efficient. The chips feature gold-plated IHS for efficient thermal transfer.
Temperatures (Stock)
The AMD Ryzen 5 7600X3D is another solid option within the AM5 lineup. The CPU is a fast gaming chip and features superb efficiency.
In terms of gaming performance, the AMD Ryzen 5 7600X3D outpaces the newly launched Zen 5 offerings such as the Ryzen 5 9600X, Ryzen 7 9700X, and even the higher-end Ryzen 9 options in some benchmarks. Versus Intel, you are looking at performance around the Core i9-14900K at the highest and around the Core i5-14600K at the lowest. It mostly averages around the same potential as the Core i7-14700K which is great.
As for application performance, the AMD Ryzen 5 7600X3D performs similar to the Ryzen 5 7600X but mostly ends up 5-10% slower due to bigger clock speed regressions. This is still a 65W chip and some of that power needs to be conserved for the 3D V-Cache stack. As a result, you will be at the entry-level of performance and here, the Intel offerings will feel like a much better option if you plan on doing some multi-threading intensive work besides just gaming. The Core i5-13600K will be a nice option if you're looking for a mix of both great application and gaming performance.
Power and Temperatures of the AMD Ryzen 5 7600X3D are solid with the chip hardly ever going above 60W in gaming workloads which is crazy given that it manages to be about as fast as the i9-14900K while sipping several watts lower power. Temperatures aren't crazy and well within the 80C range which is lower than its peak operating limit of 89C and you don't have to use a high-end AIO to cool this chip as a standard air-cooled will do the job just fine.
In terms of pricing, the $299 US price tag is a bit steep considering that you can find the Ryzen 7 7800X3D at around the same price points in discounts every now and then. If you do find the 7 7800X3D between $300-$340, then it's a wise decision to go for that chip. The Ryzen 5 7600X3D would have been a deal-breaker at $249 US which would make it a very competitive and strong option for the AM5 platform but it is obvious that AMD doesn't want to kill the sales of its Ryzen 7 7800X3D or the newly launched Ryzen 9000 chips. However, we can expect price adjustments in the coming months, and if the Ryzen 5 7600X3D can hit a price of around $250 US (or lower), it will easily become the new gaming champ.
Overall, the AMD Ryzen 5 7600X3D is the next-best gaming chip to get for the AM5 masses and one that can incentivize gamers to move from their older AM4 platforms to the newer AM5 platforms.
