It seems like the first wave of AI devices is not really getting the reception their respective manufacturers thought they would. We have seen the Humane AI pin go through a lot of criticism, and just when we thought that this might not happen again, the same started happening to the Rabbit R1. It is safe to say that these devices, no matter how good they are, are simply not ready for prime time.
Rabbit R1 and Humane AI pin continue to get panned as more disappointment shows face
Now, iFixit has decided to tear down both the Rabbit R1 and the Humane AI pin, and they have some thoughts on this as well. Aside from the fact that both these devices are not easy to repair, the company has talked about how these could have just been apps. Something that we have heard before, too. You can have a look at the teardown video below:
The video shows Rabbit R1 going under the proverbial knife first - the teardown reveals that the device comes with a 3.85Wh battery. The device also has motors and gears for the camera and a handy input wheel, along with the mainboard. The Humane AI pin is a lot more boring as it comes with a smaller 1.087Wh battery, speaker, laser projector, proximity sensor, charging coil, and mainboard.
If you are wondering why, despite being a teardown video for two devices, it is oddly short, then you should know that there is not much going on inside these devices. Both the Humane AI pin and the Rabbit R1 are unnecessarily difficult to repair. If you want to get to the small batteries, you are going to have to remove the back panels, which are held with glue. The whole process just makes it very counter-intuitive and cumbersome. iFixit even went to the extent of saying that both the Rabbit R1 and Humane AI pin could have just been apps instead of devices that cost a decent amount of money.
Honestly, I am not really surprised that these devices have been under a lot of scrutiny ever since they launched. I did not really understand why one would want a separate device to do things that a smartphone could do. I would rather have my smartphone perform all these tasks than carry multiple devices for something as simple as this.
