The Snapdragon Summit is scheduled to kick off next month, with the date set for September 23. The likely star of the announcements will be the Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 2, or does Qualcomm have other plans on what it will be naming its upcoming flagship SoC? According to the latest rumor, the San Diego firm is once more switching up its naming scheme, and if you thought that it was not confusing before, you are about to learn very quickly.
The flagship Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 2 could officially be called the Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 5
Given that Qualcomm’s current-generation flagship silicon is the Snapdragon 8 Elite, it would make sense chronologically to name its immediate successor the Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 2, or the Snapdragon 8 Elite 2. Unfortunately, according to Digital Chat Station on Weibo, the actual name of the chipset with the designation number ‘SM8850’ will be the Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 5. Assuming this is the actual name, one can only wonder what Qualcomm was contemplating when jumping five numbers from the Snapdragon 8 Elite.
Then again, the Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 5 is not the only silicon that Qualcomm plans to announce in the near future. Recently, the REDMAGIC 11 Pro was spotted on Geekbench 6, but instead of being tested with Qualcomm’s top-end chipset, we deduced that this particular smartphone in question was equipped with the Snapdragon 8 Gen 5, an SoC that will share many similarities with the Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 5. In short, the second SoC is expected to deliver lower performance while offering Qualcomm’s partners a more affordable alternative to use in their devices.
The number ‘5’ could remove the confusion from Qualcomm’s upcoming lineup, and it is possible that the company settled on this number because the Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 2 and the Snapdragon 8 Gen 5 names could appear out of place despite belonging to the same lineup. Then again, the tipster has been incorrect in the past, so remember to treat this rumor with a pinch of salt and we will return with more updates.
