Why should monitors have all the fun with the ultra-wide format when you can grab a foot-long screen in your hands?

Pure DIY Creates a Custom Ryzen Z2 Extreme-Based Ultra Wide Handheld, Boasting a 32:9 Aspect Ratio; Screen Goes Bigger Than a Car's Rearview Mirror

Gaming handhelds are compact for a reason, but we can't deny that a bigger screen is more immersive. However, a foot-long screen? That's overkill, but not impossible at all. Bilibili PURE DIY channel just created such a weird and incredibly ultra-wide gaming handheld that might be the longest/biggest handheld we have ever seen. And it's not weak by any means! Powered by the flagship Ryzen Z2 series CPU, aka Zen 5-based 8-core/16-thread Ryzen Z2 Extreme, it boasts one of the fastest configurations.

The guy likely sourced an ultra-wide 32:9 aspect ratio display from one of the portable monitor manufacturers, and looking at the size, it appears to be nearly 12 inches. Nonetheless, a custom chassis was used to fit the components and get the I/O ports for necessary connectivity. The chassis looks ventilated from the sides, but doesn't have enough ventilation at the back, which could heat up the machine quickly.

The chassis has a kickstand if the user wants to play from a distance. The controllers are detachable, making the handheld a versatile option that can be used as a compact mini PC as well. The guy showcased some racing games, which are ideal on such large ultra-wide screens, but perhaps the console can be used for stuff like video and audio editing due to its length. Pure DIY took care of such productivity tasks by using a touchscreen-enabled display, which makes editing on the handheld a breeze.

It's quite responsive and should get the job done quickly. Judging by the video, the volume is also sufficient for gaming and content creation. But of course, portability remains a big factor. Since this is a DIY project and not a practical solution for most, I don't think handheld manufacturers will take such an approach. We could see ultra-wide handhelds in the future, but the 32:9 is just too much.
