LG Will Not Launch The LG G7 This Year; Company Aiming To Completely ‘Re-brand’ Lineup, Believes Korean Press

As we kick off 2018, there are a lot of new flagship smartphones to look forward to. Manufacturers will build on their accomplishments last year. 2017 was a great year for high-end devices. We got a lot of upgrades that were long awaited for. Both edge to edge OLEDs and 10nm processors made it to consumers. Both are equally important, as the former removes ugly bezels and the latter improves performance and power efficiency. One company that got left behind to an extent last year was LG. It launched the G6 with 2016’s Snapdragon 821, thus failing to make it qualify as a true flagship. Will 2018 be any different? Take a look below to find out.

LG Looking To ‘Re-brand’ The G Lineup; Company Believes Move Is Common For Flagship Smartphones

It’s no secret that LG’s had it tough in the high-end smartphone world lately. Not only did it fail to equip last year’s G6 with the latest hardware, things didn’t fare too well with the G5 either. The smartphone is truly innovative, if we take an unbiased look. It’s modular design pays homage to both Android and iOS at the same time. It did so by ensuring as much functionality as possible, while doing more with less at the same time.

But, the market didn’t appreciate the G5. Part of this is due to inadequate marketing. LG simply failed to reach consumers properly. Goes to show why Apple frets over the tiniest of marketing details. As a result, sales plummeted, and with them, revenues. Now, the company looks to make a fresh start according to the Korean media.

“LG is preparing a new brand strategy for the G series in the first half of the year. Numbering the phone with a two-digit number and re-branding the phone with a new name are some of the options on the table.” according to an official. Another official believes that this is nothing new. Speaking to The Investor, he believes, “Re-branding flagship models is nothing new, and Samsung and Apple have done so for their own flagships.

We’ll digress with the second statement. Neither Apple nor Samsung have changed nomenclature for their flagships. To do so will be a disaster. Both the Galaxy S and iPhone lineup are best sellers, known internationally. Of course reference ‘numbers’ have been skipped over, but that isn’t dramatic. However, such a move just might breathe new life into LG’s fortunes. Of course, the company will have to do some serious marketing homework. Thoughts?
