OpenAI seems to have hit a home run with Sora, its new app for AI-generated videos, judging by the app's accelerating download trend.
To wit, Bill Peebles, the head of Sora at OpenAI, noted today that the app has hit 1 million downloads in less than 5 days, equating to an average download cadence of around 200,000 per day.
This download momentum become even more remarkable when one considers the fact that Sora is currently not freely downloadable, with access restricted to invitations only. What's more, the app is currently only available in the North America region.
What is The Sora App?
- OpenAI's Sora 2 is a text-to-video model.
- The Sora app is a social media platform where users can create and share videos using the Sora model.
- The app allows users to upload a still image and then animate it in the form of a video.
- The app's Cameo feature allows users to insert their hyper-realistic avatar into different videos.
- The app automatically adds music, sound effects, and even entire dialogues, based on the nature of the prompt.
- A TikTok-style "For You" page displays a running feed of AI-generated videos, based on the interests of a given user.
Of course, the Sora app is not without its controversies, especially around supposed copyright infringements. For instance, recently some users were able to create and upload independent characters within iconic shows such as SpongeBob SquarePants, Rick and Morty, and South Park, altering the original story arch in the process.
The Motion Picture Association recently said in a statement that videos that "infringe our members’ films, shows, and characters have proliferated on OpenAI’s service," calling on the firm to "take immediate and decisive action to address this issue."
To address this issue, OpenAI is planning to give copyright holders a more granular control over character generation and how their content is used within the app.
