OpenAI CEO Sam Altman Thinks That The Apple Vision Pro Is The Second Most Impressive Product After The iPhone

Feb 11, 2024 at 06:23am EST

The Apple Vision Pro has caught the attention of mainstream media, competitors, and founders of startups valued at billions of dollars. Whether or not OpenAI CEO Sam Altman purchased a separate AR headset for himself or just experienced a small demo, the $3,499 device has likely put on a perpetual positive impression as he believes that it is the second-most impressive piece of technology, with the first one being the iPhone.

Sam Altman also acknowledges that ChatGPT has a worse name than Apple Vision Pro

On X, Altman does not state why he believes that the iPhone is still the single most impressive product in the technological space, but putting the Apple Vision Pro right next to something unveiled back in 2007 and changed the smartphone industry forever is a revered accolade. If his post implied which device has had the most impact, then there is no question about it; the iPhone has single-handedly revolutionized this category as, before its inception, handsets predominantly shipped with physical keyboards and a stylus.

With the Apple Vision Pro, there are tons of possibilities, but its potential is possibly limited by the fact that it costs $3,499, and that too for the base model. Additionally, the mixed-reality headset is only available in the U.S., so as it opens up in other markets, its capabilities may become better known to users. Regarding the official product names, Altman admits that his chatbot, ChatGPT, has a worse name than Apple Vision Pro, but given that everyone knows what it is and what it does, there is probably no going back to a different name.

Together with Apple’s former Industrial Design Chief, Jony Ive, and a recently recruited executive who worked on the iPhone, Tang Tan, have joined forces with the creator of ChatGPT to work on an unnamed product that will have the power of AI behind it. People close to the matter are calling it the ‘iPhone of AI,’ so the Apple Vision Pro may inspire OpenAI’s CEO to create something revolutionary in the coming years.
