OpenAI CEO Sam Altman says that OpenAI tried to poach his employees with extremely attractive offers

Companies that are knee-deep in the generative AI space are throwing away top dollar to secure talented individuals to obtain what little edge they can get in this category, with OpenAI leading from the front. Meta is not too far behind, and was earlier reported to be on a hiring spree. Later, in a podcast, we learn from Sam Altman, the boss of the firm responsible for the legendary chatbot, ChatGPT, that Meta attempted to poach some of his talent, but luckily for him, those attempts were unsuccessful.

Sam Altman does not think that Meta is ‘great at innovation,’ but respects many things about the company

On Uncapped with Jack Altman, details reported by TechCrunch stated that Sam Altman’s talent was targeted by Meta, with the latter attempting to lure these employees with ‘giant offers’ which would have taken a great deal of resolve to ignore or reject. In the interview, Altman says that OpenAI’s competitor was offering lucrative signing bonuses of $100 million and more compensation for the year.

Those are definitely a ton of Benjamins to be letting go of, but Altman is thankful that none of OpenAI’s top talent has taken Meta up on its offer. During the podcast, he stated that his employees concluded that OpenAI had a better chance of achieving Accelerated General Intelligence, or AGI, than Meta and would be a far more valuable company than the latter. He also said that Meta’s primary focus was to poach talent with top-tier salaries instead of focusing on AGI, which would not create a great culture.

OpenAI’s lead researchers, Noam Brown, as well as Google’s AI architect, Koray Kavukcuoglu, were poached by Meta, but those attempts were in vain. Altman also used the platform to take minor jabs at its generative AI rival, stating that while he respects many things about Meta, he does not believe that the company is great at innovating, and that innovation is key in excelling in this area.

This is probably not the last time that Meta will attempt to secure the competition’s talent for itself, but if OpenAI’s employees remain steadfast regarding their core mission, those attempts will remain futile.
