First MacBook Pro With OLED Technology Still A Few Years Away, As Apple’s Supply Chain Has To Yet To Build Production Lines

Apple’s first OLED iPad Pro lineup is expected to debut next year, which can only mean that it will unveil the first MacBook Pro family with the same technology, too, right? Unfortunately, one report states that a transition from mini-LED to OLED will not be possible without the manufacturers setting up the required production lines, and that will take years to complete.

Report does not dive into the extra cost of the laptop-sized OLED panels that will eventually be found in the MacBook Pro

In a webinar hosted by Bloomberg, Display Supply Chain Consultants founder and CEO Ross Young commented on the launch time frame of the OLED MacBook Pro family. MacRumors reports that the first models that will finally shift away from the realm of mini-LED are still a few years away, with an unveiling not expected until 2026 or 2027.

Also, keep in mind that the aforementioned estimation is if everything goes according to plan. However, with manufacturers yet to set up dedicated production lines for the 14-inch and 16-inch versions, a lot could not end up going Apple’s way. The webinar did not touch on the cost of these OLED panels.

As the majority of you know, not every display, particularly OLED, is made the same, and given Apple’s propensity to want high-quality components to be a part of its products, the cost of these displays could be high. It is reported that for the iPad Pro, Apple has tapped Samsung and LG to mass produce LTPO OLED screens, and it should not be surprising to see these tablets also ship ProMotion support.

Given that no other manufacturer can deliver the same quality, we are confident that these two Korean firms will establish dedicated manufacturing lines for the new MacBook Pro family.
