Apple To Reportedly Delay Its OLED MacBook Air Launch To 2029 Due To Poor Sales Of Its Latest iPad Pro Models, No Plan Of Introducing mini-LED Models Either

OLED MacBook Air reportedly delayed to 2029

The 11-inch and 13-inch M4 iPad Pro models were the latest Apple devices to transition to OLED technology, with the new M4 chipset and major design change expected to bring in an increased popularity wave. Unfortunately, Apple may have been a little too optimistic about how the public would view these tablets, and with a lower sales volume, a new report states that the technology giant has been forced to delay the OLED MacBook Air launch to 2029.

With only six million recorded iPad Pro shipments, the OLED MacBook Air that was supposed to arrive sometime in 2027 has been delayed

Even though Apple eventually intends to gravitate its entire product range to OLED technology, there have been a few hiccups along the way. For instance, The Elec reports that the company was previously estimated to ship 10 million of its 11-inch and 13-inch iPad Pro models but has only recorded 6 million units. This setback means that the Cupertino firm could not pursue the release of its OLED MacBook Air earlier, meaning that the portable Mac flaunting the new display technology has been delayed to 2029.

Given that tandem OLED is costly to mass produce, it would mean little if Apple were to invest billions in production facilities and panel orders just for the new MacBook Air to sell fewer shipments annually. However, before the launch of this model, Apple has been reported to unveil an OLED MacBook Pro in 2026. Sadly, the report does not mention if the poor iPad Pro sales will result in the California-based titan also delaying the more pricier Mac’s release.

The disappointing revelation is that Apple will not transition to mini-LED from IPS LCD for the MacBook Air as it did with its MacBook Pro, meaning that we will have to continue to witness the launch of these machines with subpar panels. Fortunately, the majority of customers will be more concerned with the other internal specifications of these products, and while an OLED upgrade is welcomed and worth waiting for, we doubt it will heavily influence a buyer’s decision.

Even now, Apple’s 13-inch and 15-inch M3 MacBook Air will probably garner immense popularity because they start from just $899 on Amazon and offer 16GB unified RAM for their base configurations. With the M4 models just around the corner, we feel that customers would pick these up thanks to their possible stellar pricing and chipset upgrade.
