The RTX 5090D is reportedly getting a big downgrade due to the new export rules set by the US government. More high-end RTX 50 series GPUs are expected at the end of this year.
Nerfed GeForce RTX 5090D Rumored to be Brought Down to Just 14K Cores, 1.3 TB/s Memory Bandwidth; Performance to Get a Big Downgrade
As we have already entered the second quarter of 2025, NVIDIA has likely already stopped the supply of the RTX 5090D chips to its board partners. The China-exclusive GeForce RTX 5090D wasn't that behind in terms of gaming performance compared to the full-fledged RTX 5090 GPU, but due to the latest US export rules, the RTX 5090D was banned in China.
As per the new rules, the RTX 5090D can't have more than 1.4 TB/s of memory bandwidth and a combined bandwidth (memory and I/O) of over 1.7 TB/s, which is why NVIDIA is introducing a newer but significantly downgraded RTX 5090D. The specs aren't official, but the latest report from Baidu forums suggests that the newer RTX 5090D GPU will be drastically slower in performance than the original RTX 5090
As per the moderator of the Baidu forums, the RTX 5090D will be launching in the near future, but the price isn't set yet. If the rumored specifications are true, then it should definitely sell for much lower, and according to the leaker @harukaze5719, the newer RTX 5090D might be nerfed to the RTX PRO 5000-level.
If that happens, the RTX 5090D is going down from 21,760 CUDA cores to just 14,080 cores. Not only that, but the memory is also supposedly going to take a hit with a reduction in both memory interface and video memory capacity. With just a 384-bit memory bus width, expect the RTX 5090D to feature 24 GB GDDR7 VRAM, which is 8 GB less than the RTX 5090/RTX 5090D. The reduction in memory width will result in just 1344 GB/s of memory bandwidth, which abides by the latest US export rules.
With such specifications, expect the RTX 5090D to be significantly slower in both gaming and productivity workloads, and it may entirely lose its identity of being a flagship card. Nonetheless, there is some newer information shared by the forum moderator as well, including the release date of the RTX 5060, which is said to be 20th May. The same day, AMD is also launching its RX 9060 XT GPU, but previously, the RTX 5060 was expected on the 19th.
Another big leak is on a more powerful 80-class GPU, which will be either the RTX 5080 Super or the RTX 5080 Ti. It is expected to be launched before the end of this year and will feature 24 GB of memory capacity. It is also possible that the RTX 5080 Ti/S will be renamed to RTX 5090D in China if the specs are identical to the RTX PRO 5000, but nothing is confirmed yet.
