Owners of the MIG Switch flashcart should exercise extra caution when using it on a Nintendo Switch 2 system while connected online, as the Japanese company has swiftly banned users who have done so.
A few days ago, a new firmware update was launched for the known flashcart, which made it compatible with the next-generation Nintendo system to play backward-compatible titles. Using the MIG Switch on the Nintendo Switch 2 while connected online, however, will lead to a swift ban, as it is being widely reported on X and Reddit, and even using legit backups of owned games isn't safe, as the Japanese company clearly has a way of detecting if the flashcart has been used, regardless of which game is being played. Reportedly, the Nintendo accounts associated with the banned systems haven't suffered the same fate, but it may only be a matter of time before the Japanese company decides to take more severe actions, especially against repeated offenders.
A banned Nintendo Switch 2 system is still entirely usable, but not being able to access the online services means being unable to play multiplayer games online, use GameChat, purchase games and DLC from the eShop, download game updates and DLC, or redeem Game-Key Cards. The latter can be an especially problematic limitation, considering how many launch retail releases are Game-Key Cards, not full cartridges, and how things may not be that different in the future.
