A new camera sensor for the iPhone is rumored to be undergoing testing, according to a tipster, but details are obscure on whether the new imaging hardware will arrive to the iPhone 18 lineup or be reserved for a subsequent launch. While we dissect the latest findings and get to the bottom of this, the new sensor’s physical size has been shared, with the same rumor also stating that the ultrawide-angle camera will feature Optical Image Stabilization, bringing in one of the most effective ways to reduce sensor shake in a smartphone.
New camera size of 1/1.2 inches is the same one belonging to the 200MP unit that Apple is rumored to be testing
Fresh details shared by Digital Chat Station once again mention the 1/1.2-inch camera size that Apple is said to be testing. However, these dimensions belong to a 200MP camera that the Cupertino firm was evaluating, so assuming that both of these sensors are related, then it’s highly unlikely that Apple will bring the technology to the iPhone 18 series.
For months now, we’ve been hearing that the upcoming lineup will continue to ship with a 48MP configuration. It’s possible the rumor refers to the 20th-anniversary iPhone, and to be fair, a 200MP camera with a 1/1.2-inch sensor would be the ideal upgrade for this flagship.
Comparing this sensor to the one on the iPhone 17 Pro and iPhone 17 Pro Max, the newer version is 6.67 percent larger, with the higher 200MP resolution making images and video crispier than before. The rumor also talks about upgrading the ultrawide-angle camera by bringing Optical Image Stabilization (OIS), making it a major upgrade.
To date, Apple has yet to introduce any kind of hardware stabilization to its ultrawide-angle units, so this will be a welcome upgrade. Digital Chat Station also adds to the rumor that the individual pixel count needs additional verification before he is ready to provide details. On a 200MP camera, the individual pixel count is reduced, meaning that less light will be absorbed by those pixels, resulting in ‘grainier’ images or video captured.
We expect Apple to leverage advanced computational techniques to address this film grain problem, and given that these specifications will likely apply to the 200MP unit, the company has plenty of time to make adjustments before its launch.
