MSI has officially unveiled its flagship RTX 50 graphics card, the GeForce RTX 5090 Lightning Z, with up to 1000W of power.
Lightning Returns! MSI's GeForce RTX 5090 Lightning Z Pushes NVIDIA's Flagship Blackwell GPU With Its Excellent PCB Design, Extreme AIO Cooling & Does So In A Style With An 8" Display
The MSI GeForce RTX 5090 Lightning Z graphics card has been covered by us three times within the past two days. This is the level of excitement this particular graphics card has gotten me into, and well, now it is finally official.
MSI has crafted a work of art, the GeForce RTX 5090 Lightning Z graphics card shakes things up with its insane PCB design which packs 40 VRM phases, pushes 800W of power in the standard OC mode, 1000 Watts with the Extreme Mode, and even comes with a overclocker-specific "2500W" XOC BIOS which is going to void your warranty if you ever use it but if you do, please make sure to break some records with it. MSI recommends a 1600W or higher PSU for this beast of a card.
As for the performance, the card is rated at a boost frequency of 2730 MHz, but with the Extreme option in the MSI Center app, you can get the card running at up to 2775 MHz boost clocks. But that's not even close to this card's true overclocking potential, as it did manage to reach almost a 1 GHz higher frequency in the overclocks that we showcased yesterday.
Now coming to the design, the MSI GeForce RTX 5090 Lightning Z comes with a closed-loop AIO cooler, which features a 360mm radiator. The card is the world's first to feature a full-copper and full-cover cold plate that covers the GPU, VRAM, and VRMs. All of this is encased within a 2.5 slot shroud with the iconic yellow and black theme that MSI and its Lightning series are known for. The unit measures 260 x 151 x 61 mm.
The following are the main cooling innovations that MSI integrated within the Lightning Z 2026 graphics card:
- Full-Cover Cold Plate (precision water channels covering GPU, VRAM, and MOSFETs)
- Patented Hybrid-Fin Radiator (Optimized Airflow)
- Lightning Fan (Liquid Crystal Polymer Design)
- Next-Gen Pump (Higher Pressure & Coolant Flow)
- Carbon Fiber Backplate (Premium Looks, More Durable)
Another highlight of the new Lightning Z model is that while it has a compact design, it comes with an 8" display over the shroud, which is impressive and larger than that of flagship smartphones. The overall build also looks and feels excellent with a carbon fiber exterior and a lightning theme across the whole card.
MSI hasn't confirmed the pricing or availability date yet, but they have confirmed that the card will be a limited edition model with only 1300 units produced throughout its life cycle, so expect a premium cost.
