AI tools are increasingly being paid heed to by tech companies, with a focus on making the technology more sophisticated. While we have come far in terms of advancement, an increasing number of chatbots are now becoming smarter and more intuitive, and we feel closer to how humans interact and their mental processes. However, as tools like ChatGPT become more efficient, users increasingly rely on them daily and academically. With AI becoming more intelligent, research now suggests that it is eroding humans' cognitive abilities.
Scientists now claim that increasingly relying on AI tools like ChatGPT is leading to poor cognitive abilities and diminishing critical thinking skills
As AI frenzy is not going away any time soon, and it is becoming increasingly integrated into our daily lives, users seem to be depending on these AI tools for education and for generally gaining information on any aspect they are struggling with. While ChatGPT and other tools are becoming shockingly intelligent, a recent MIT study shed some light on the cognitive effects that ChatGPT dependence may have on users.
The study divided participants into three groups and assigned them the task of writing essays using either ChatGPT, a search engine, or no tool at all. ECG scans were used to evaluate the brain activities during this writing task. The essays were then assessed by both AI systems and human reviewers for better accuracy. According to the findings, the group of participants that relied on ChatGPT for the writing process had the lowest level of neural activation, especially in areas such as cognitive engagement and memory. The participants also struggled with memory retention as they were not able to properly recall what they had written.
Compared to the ChatGPT users, those who did not rely on technological assistance showed strong memory retention and brain engagement and were able to engage in deeper cognitive involvement. Another session was then carried out, and the ChatGPT group was asked to do the essay without the dependence on ChatGPT, and the results were even more alarming, as the ChatGPT group performed worse than its peers. This basically showed that repeatedly relying on ChatGPT and other AI tools led to a state the researchers referred to as cognitive debt, which was impairing the ability to think critically and even eroding core learning skills.
While these are the findings of a single study, the results do leave us thinking about our overdependence on ChatGPT and other tools and the bigger price we pay for convenience.
