As someone who bought Microsoft's Office 2019 lifetime license around 7 years back, the imminent end of support for the software suite on Apple's platforms feels surreal, made all the more incredulous by the patently blasé attitude with which Microsoft is approaching this blatant forced obsolescence.
Office 2019 apps on Apple platforms will soon enter the dreaded "reduced functionality mode," preventing you from creating new files or editing existing ones
When I bought a lifetime license for Office 2019 near the turn of the ongoing decade, I did not know that a "lifetime" to Microsoft is just around 7 years.
The maker of Windows - that veritable fount of stability (sarc) - has now casually updated its support pages with the disclosure that, effective July 13, 2026, Office 2019 apps on Apple platforms - macOS, iOS, and iPadOS - will enter the so-called "reduced functionality mode," precluding any subsequent file creation or editing activity. Such benign euphemisms to cloak a plunging dagger!
While users of Office 2021 or the Microsoft 365 subscription service still retain a recourse, one that involves updating their apps and the OS, no such intervention is available for the blighted users of Office 2019 apps, with the Redmond giant noting in an ice-cold tone:
"Office 2019 for Mac reached end of support on October 10, 2023, and no longer receives updates. Because Office 2019 cannot be updated to the required version, this issue cannot be resolved by updating or reinstalling Office 2019 for Mac."
Interestingly, Microsoft's new stated policy represents an about-face from an earlier assurance back in October 2023, when it had declared:
"Rest assured that all your Office 2019 apps will continue to function."
Even on a more elevated, philosophical plane, Microsoft's abrupt volte-face does not make much sense. After all, shouldn't the Redmond giant try to retain at least some level of trust with Apple users? Or has it abandoned even the pretense of competing with Apple's inarguably more superior offerings? Microsoft, you have been judged and found wanting!
