Microsoft Recall is an AI powered feature for CoPilot+PCs

Microsoft is using AI to drastically shape the computing world. On Monday, during a Build Conference, Microsoft unveiled a new category of PCs, namely Copilot+PCs. The biggest announcement that grabbed everyone's attention was the AI-powered feature called "Recall." This new AI feature for Copilot+PCs has the capability to search anything you have looked at on your Windows PC. Windows 11 users can now search and retrieve any past searches or activities on their PCs.

Microsoft is determined to provide a complete recall of all the activities you have done on your PC through its new AI feature

The Copilot Runtime on Windows 11 uses advanced NPUs in next-generation chips like Snapdragon X Plus and Snapdragon X Elite. Microsoft has integrated 40 AI models to allow Windows 11 to incorporate new AI features. One of these new AI features that is being widely talked about is Recall.

Recall would be using Copilot+PC's advanced processing ability to record everything the user does on the PC. This includes app activities, live meeting communication, and even the websites searched for and visited. With the help of a timeline feature, you can go through the activities that are displayed in a proper scroll manner and date back several weeks.

This is what Microsoft stated on its website:

The snapshots are encrypted and saved on your PC’s hard drive. You can use Recall to locate the content you have viewed on your PC using search or on a timeline bar that allows you to scroll through your snapshots.

The Recall feature is being compared to your PC's Eidetic memory, allowing you to access specific snapshots from a particular time period by giving prompts for the moment you are looking for. However, this feature has also raised privacy concerns, and someone with access to your Windows PC could potentially misuse the information from Recall. Check out the feature in action below:

Microsoft did address the concerns by suggesting the Recall index would remain local and on-device, with encryption to ensure the feature is only linked to specific user profiles. For now, the Recall will be coming to Copilot+PCs and will be powered by Qualcomm's Snapdragon X Elite chip. This feature is not available to older versions.

A similar feature was launched by Microsoft in 2017, namely the 'Timeline.' The Timeline of Windows 10 was later discontinued in 2021. It did not, however, take unlimited continuous snapshots. Even though Recall is still under preview status, we hope this feature is here to stay and will, prior to launch, cater to all privacy concerns.
