Microsoft has announced that its Fairwater facility, the world's most powerful AI datacenter powered by NVIDIA Blackwell, is going live ahead of schedule.
Featuring Hundreds of Thousands of NVIDIA Blackwell GPUs, Microsoft's Advanced "Fairwater" AI Datacenter is going live ahead of Schedule
In a post on X, Microsoft's CEO Satya Nadella confirmed that their Fairwater AI Datacenter is going live ahead of schedule. This is major news since the Wisconsin-based facility is poised to become the world's most powerful AI datacenter.
The datacenter was announced back in September 2025, and will be utilizing 100,000s of NVIDIA GB200 GPUs based on the Blackwell architecture. All of these GPUs will be connected into a single seamless cluster, delivering unprecedented levels of performance required to meet the demand of Agentic AI workloads.
The nature of the facility is massive; not only does it pack several Blackwell GPUs, but it also features enough fiber infrastructure to circle the globe 4.5 times. Back when the data center was announced, it was going to deliver 10x performance of the fastest supercomputers at the time. The AI system will be fully liquid-cooled through a closed-loop solution and will require no additional water after construction concludes.
Engineered to train the next decade of artificial intelligence, our Mount Pleasant facility will house hundreds of thousands of the world’s most powerful NVIDIA GPUs, operating in seamless clusters connected by enough fiber to wrap the planet four times over. These processors will handle training for frontier AI models — delivering ten times the performance of today’s fastest supercomputers.
Microsoft had already added 2 Gigawatts of capacity to its AI needs. This is the same as running two nuclear power plants. For the Fairwater facility, Microsoft states that it will harness energy from renewable sources to meet the power demands.
For the future, Microsoft has already set up multiple sites in 70+ regions where facilities identical to the Fairwater one will be constructed in locations across the US. These are in addition to the 100 datacenters that are already operational. The construction of Fairwater and other facilities will take a massive toll on the surroundings, the power sector, and the already constrained supply chain.
On this matter, Microsoft has stated that they will ensure that energy prices are not driven up by their facility, and are pre-paying for energy and electrical infrastructure for their use. This has led to the construction of a new 250MW solar power plant in Portage County, and the company also ensures full ecological protection in the vicinity.
