Apple's MacBook Neo appears to have unleashed a litany of earthquakes within the fairly complacent Windows 11-based laptop sphere, so much so that Microsoft is now apparently paying third-party organizations to come up with favorable comparisons to downplay the MacBook Neo's utility.
Signal65 concludes in a Microsoft-funded report that Windows 11-based laptops provide higher value than Apple's MacBook Neo
In its latest Lab Insights report, which has been commissioned by none other than Microsoft itself, Signal65 notes:
"[Across the segment targeted by Apple's MacBook Neo], many Windows 11 laptops are designed to target similar audiences with a differentiated value proposition that may include configurations with more memory or storage, larger displays, broader connectivity options, and, for a limited time, a promotional offer for US based college students that includes additional subscriptions and a gaming controller package – a software and hardware package valued at over $500."
Basically, Signal65 compared four Windows 11 laptops - the Lenovo IdeaPad Slim 3x, HP OmniBook 5, Lenovo Yoga 7i, and HP OmniBook X Flip - with Apple's MacBook Neo, and found that in many cases, Windows 11 laptops offered more storage and RAM, larger screens, broader connectivity options, and up to "92% faster multi-thread CPU performance," based on Cinebench tests.
Critically, Signal65 found the value proposition was quite severely skewed in favor of the Lenovo IdeaPad Slim 3x, which retails for $449 vs. the $599 starting price for the MacBook Neo, and yet offers more storage and RAM, along with a larger display, greater connectivity options, and a stronger multi-thread performance. What's more, the Lenovo IdeaPad Slim 3x also supposedly offers a 56 percent longer battery life than the MacBook Neo.
As a counter, do note that the Apple MacBook Neo's relatively constrained battery life against the Lenovo IdeaPad Slim 3x is largely a function of its brighter 500-nits display. Of course, the fact that the Apple MacBook Neo only has a 36.5Wh battery against a 60Wh one on the Lenovo IdeaPad does not help.
At the end of the day, a choice between an Apple MacBook Neo and a comparable budget Windows 11 laptop boils down to personal preferences. If you are already locked within Apple's sprawling ecosystem, the MacBook Neo is a no-brainer choice. If budget is your primary concern, you won't be able to do better than the Lenovo IdeaPad.
For the benefit of those who might not be aware, the MacBook Neo features a 13-inch Liquid Retina display with a 2,408 x 1,506 resolution and 500 nits brightness, uniform bezels, Touch ID, dual-firing speakers that support Spatial Audio, a 1080p front camera, a brightly colored aluminum frame, and a color-matching keyboard.
But it does come with some compromises, including just two USB-C ports with wildly different characteristics, the A18 Pro chip, 8GB RAM, and a mechanical trackpad sans pressure-sensing capabilities.
