After a historic global outage that disrupted the finance, media, transport, logistics, and other industries worldwide, Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella shared a few details about the accident. According to him, the mishap occurred after Microsoft's partner Crowdstrike rolled out a software update that rendered computers worldwide inoperable. He added that Microsoft is working with Crowdstrike to resolve the disruption, and according to Tesla CEO Elon Musk, the event also shook up the automobile supply chain. True to form, Musk has spent most of the time since the outage on his social media platform X, and most of his posts have focused on the outage.

Microsoft CEO Stresses That His Firm Is Working With Partners To Help Bring Their Systems Online

The outage, which is still ongoing, is one of the largest of its kind in history, as systems from the U.S. to Europe and Australia were all affected by it. These range from banking services to rail networks, automotive supply chains, airlines, media and other services that rely on Crowdstrike and Microsoft for their operations. Crowdstrike is primarily a cloud based enterprise security services provider, and since several of Microsoft's licensed Windows platforms depend on it, the outage led to a worldwide suspension of a large number of computers linked with these platforms.

In his first set of remarks after the outage, Nadella confirmed in a brief post on X that Crowdstrike's software update was responsible for the global disruption. He outlined that Crowdstrike "released an update that began impacting IT systems globally," adding that his firm was working with Crowdstrike and other industry actors to "provide customers technical guidance and support to safely bring their systems back online." This suggests that a large portion of the affectees are yet to gain access to their computers, and his comments mirror those made by Crowdstrike earlier.

In response to Nadella's statements, Musk commented that the outage had also given "a seizure to the automotive supply chain," implying that the impact of the outage was wider than initially expected. In the aftermath of the AI wave spurred by its investment in OpenAI, Microsoft's role in the global technology industry has only grown, especially as it has pitched its Azure Cloud Computing system to businesses for their artificial intelligence workloads.

However, Microsoft's shares did not reflect any impact of the outage during trading today, as the brunt was borne by Crowdstrike's stock, which is down 11% as of late afternoon after having gained roughly 3% over its opening price of $294.

Musk's comments related to the outage weren't limited to Nadella. They include statements sharing that Crowdstrike's role as a security platform led to the "antivirus" being "the virus" and describing the outage as the largest "IT fail ever." Musk also believes that the outage shows the dangers behind software being too centralized, as well as exasperation over a Crowdstrike office being empty late in the evening after the outage because of remote work.

Other remarks on X show that the billionaire wants the global economy's operating system to be more diversified to avoid a single point of failure. Crowdstrike also struck "a very large crowd," Musk commented, and crucially, he added later that his firms had "deleted Crowdstrike from all of our systems."
