4A Games, the studio behind the beloved Metro series has announced the next entry, Metro 2039, with a full reveal set for this coming Thursday, April 16, 2026 at 10am PT / 1pm ET / 6pm BST, as part of an 'Xbox First Look' event. This comes after a rumor that a new Metro game would be revealed popped up at the end of last week, amidst rumors of a State of Play event also set for this Thursday.
So while we don't have official confirmation yet about a State of Play event (which, as we said last week, likely won't happen until a day or at max two days ahead of the event based on Sony's previous patterns), we now know that the same insiders who pointed to a new Metro game and a State of Play had credible info on at least one of those elements. It doesn't mean a State of Play is locked-in for this week, but it does make it seem more likely.
As for Metro 2039, if there is a State of Play this week, 4A Games has seemingly chosen to skip it and go with Xbox to host the game's reveal. The Xbox Wire blog post that shared the news of the 'Xbox First Look' event says that "Xbox has always been a home for the franchise, and we're honored to continue that relationship by bringing you a first look at this next exciting chapter."
Also in that Xbox Wire post is, well, nothing about the game, really. Outside of calling Metro 2039 "the fourth mainline entry from 4A Games in the series based on the iconic novels of Dmitry Glukhovsky, following Metro 2033 (2010), Metro: Last Light (2013), and Metro Exodus (2019)," it doesn't tell us anything about Metro 2039.
So for a few more days, at least, 4A Games is playing its cards close to its chest. At least we won't have to wait very long to find out more.
The other question now becomes: how busy will April 16 end up being? Will it feature the full reveal of Assassin's Creed Black Flag Resynced and a State of Play, per last week's rumors? The week has already started off strong with this reveal. Hopefully we're not left waiting too much longer to see if the rest of last week's rumors were correct.
