OpenAI's ChatGPT, an AI-powered chatbot service, has just received a huge upgrade, thanks to the GPT-5.1 family of AI models that are now rolling out.

GPT-5.1 models make OpenAI's ChatGPT service a lot smarter, warmer, and conversationally adept

OpenAI has just updated its GPT-5 series of AI models with new additions:

GPT-5.1 Instant

  1. An everyday-use model that offers more insightful responses, that too, replete with a more natural and warmer tone and tenor.
  2. The model is designed to handle simple tasks and excels at following instructions.
  3. Nonetheless, it can handle the more challenging queries via adaptive reasoning.

GPT-5.1 Thinking

  1. An advanced reasoning model that can change how many computational resources to devote to a particular query based on its complexity.
  2. The model handles relatively simple queries around twice as fast, while devoting a lot more time to the more complex tasks, ensuring consistency and uniformity across all of its responses.
  3. Basically, the model is twice as fast on the simplest of tasks, and twice as slow on the most complex of queries.

Additional details:

  1. GPT-5.1 Auto decides which model should receive a given query.
  2. Both models are now rolling out to OpenAI's paid clients (Pro, Plus, Go, Business).
  3. Access for free and guest users would be enabled at a later date.
  4. GPT-5.0 Instant and GPT-5.0 Thinking will remain available to ChatGPT paid users under the legacy models category for three months.

Alongside these two models, OpenAI is now allowing users to modify ChatGPT's conversational style to their liking, adding Professional, Candid, and Quirky styles to the Default, Friendly, Efficient, Cynical, and Nerdy styles that are already available.

Today's product launches come roughly a month after OpenAI took on Google's Chrome and Perplexity Comet with a dedicated AI browser, called ChatGPT Atlas, which can understand the context of the web page that you are browsing and answer relevant questions via the Ask ChatGPT Sidebar. Atlas can also offer suggestions as you type, as well as open, close, bookmark, and reopen any browser tab.
