M5 iPad Pro To Have Two Front Cameras, Claims New Report, But Recent Unboxing Video Shows Zero Evidence Of This Hardware

M5 iPad Pro will not feature two cameras at the front, thanks to the evidence spotted in the unboxing video

An early look at the M5 iPad Pro through an unsanctioned unboxing video revealed a ton of details of Apple’s flagship tablet, pretty much concluding that there would be nothing different other than a specifications bump, which may or may not prove handy for the potential buyer. However, a report states that while there might be two front cameras on the upcoming lineup, there is no evidence spotted in the previous clips.

Apple likely removed the feature from the M5 iPad Pro at the last minute, which is just another one of the company’s practices

A rumor doing the rounds claimed that the M5 iPad Pro would offer two front cameras, making it easier to switch between the tablet in both portrait and landscape orientations. Unfortunately, the second sensor cannot be spotted anywhere in the image below, where the YouTuber Wylsacom, who unboxed the M5 iPad Pro, placed it next to the M4 iPad Pro to show a little ‘side by side’ comparison.

In Mark Gurman’s latest ‘Power On’ newsletter, he stated that he can ‘say with certainty that M5 iPad Pro within have the second lens.’ However, the Bloomberg journalist points out that Apple habitually removes features at a highly advanced stage, and shares examples such as the second dock connector on the original iPad, along with storage capacities.

What would make Apple remove the two-camera configuration from the M5 iPad Pro?

While two front cameras on the M5 iPad Pro would offer a ton of convenience, Apple likely removed the feature because of the user’s propensity to engage with a 13-inch tablet predominantly in landscape mode, whether it is content consumption, web browsing, or productivity. For the 11-inch model, it is not cumbersome for the owner to simply rotate the slate for the camera’s viewfinder.

Additionally, the money saved by Apple over a second sensor was likely diverted to the M5 iPad Pro’s chipset upgrade and the 12GB RAM upgrade over the M4 iPad Pro’s 8GB memory for the base variant. In a series of tests, the M5 is up to 34 percent faster than the M4, and given that it is probably manufactured on TSMC’s 3nm ‘N3P,’ there is a dollar amount associated with transitioning to a better lithography.

Qualcomm and MediaTek reportedly had to pay TSMC up to 24 percent higher sum to employ TSMC’s 3nm ‘N3P’ technology for the Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 5 and Dimensity 9500, indicating that Apple would have to fork over a similar sum. Looking at these cost increases, the California-based giant may have prioritized other specification improvements rather than incorporating a second camera.
