Apple will not launch an M4 Ultra chip as the M4 Max does not have UltraFusion connector

Apple has recently unveiled its new M4 Ultra chip with the launch of the new Mac Studio, and while we have not seen any real-world benchmarks at this stage, it will feature the best performance on any Mac. It was previously speculated that the company would launch the new Mac Studio with an M4 Ultra chip, but it decided to go in a different direction. It is now being reported that the M4 Max chip does not have an UltraFusion connector, which would have paved the way for the M4 Ultra chip or could be why the company went with the M3 Ultra instead of the M4 Ultra.

Apple's M4 Max chip lacks the UltraFusion connector, hinting that there will be no M4 Ultra chip in the future

An Apple spokesperson has told the French tech website Numerama that the M4 Max chip lacks the UltraFusion connector, an essential element that allows two chips to be connected together. We believe this is one of the major reasons why the company decided to stick to the M3 Ultra instead of jumping to the M4 series of chips for the 'Ultra' version.

Furthermore, does this also eliminate the possibility of Apple forgoing its plans to launch an M4 Ultra chip altogether? Apple could still make new chips with an UltraFusion connector, but according to the report, the company downplayed the possibility. Moreover, there is a high chance that the company will skip the M4 Ultra chip altogether and move towards the M5 Ultra instead.

This is because the company recently stated in an interview with Ars Technica that not every M-series of chip for the Mac will have an "Ultra" variant. While we did get the M1 Ultra and M2 Ultra chips, it seems that the company is open to the idea of skipping the M4 Ultra. Apple has just launched the new M3 Ultra chip for the Mac Studio, which is manufactured using UltraFusion technology, where two M3 Max chips are fused together.

The M3 Ultra's UltraFusion technology allows the chip to feature up to a 32-core CPU and up to an 80-core GPU coupled with support for up to 512GB of unified RAM. At this stage, the chip is by far the top-performing chip in Apple's ecosystem, and it will remain like this until the company launches another Ultra variant. We will share more details on the chip's performance and benchmarks, so be sure to keep an eye out.
