Apple’s updated MacBook Pro lineup with M5 Pro and M5 Max options is available to pre-order, but not every customer wanting a portable Mac will keep track of the company’s announcements, as some of them had already placed an order for some M4 Max versions just days before the unveiling. While we can picture their shock when Apple announced its new chipsets, what’s an even bigger surprise is that the company outright canceled those M4 Max MacBook Pro orders, only to update them with M5 Max variants. Now that’s top-tier customer service.
One lucky customer who placed an order for the M4 MacBook Air will receive an M5 upgrade, as Apple doubles down on newer chipset shipments
On Reddit, two customers going by the usernames ‘TheBaHa’ and ‘_o2b_’ have shared their experiences below of what happened shortly after they configured their M4 Max MacBook Pro models. Both machines are expensive configurations, meaning that these customers spent top dollar to obtain some of the best hardware available for this generation.
“I ordered a 14-inch MacBook Pro (M4 Max) last week with 16-core CPU, 40-core GPU, 64GB unified memory, 1TB SSD and a Standard (non-nano) display.
I noticed yesterday that they cancelled my order and created a new one but I am only now realising that my order was cancelled and replaced with the M5.
Which is great but will they match the spec I ordered first or will I just received a standard M5 MacBook?
I can’t see the doc in the order.”
With Apple expected to replace both configurations with M5 Max MacBook Pro models, these customers will be downright happy that they didn’t go for any premium Windows notebook alternative. The company has switched to a new Fusion Architecture with the M5 Pro and M5 Max, which allows individual CPU and GPU dies to be placed on a single package, resulting in lowered electrical resistance, improved heat dissipation, reduced manufacturing costs, and other advantages.
“I placed an order for an M4 Max with a 48GB/16-core CPU and a 40-core GPU with a 1TB SSD in mid-February.
Until 30 minutes ago, the order was still processing, and the delivery estimate was from March 3rd to 10th.
Now, suddenly, my M4 Max order has been canceled, and an M5 Max is in processing, with a delivery estimate of March 11th.
Did Apple do the unthinkable, or is it a glitch? I haven’t received any email about this yet and the pricing shows as same what the m4max was for.”
Another lucky customer with the username ‘97NA8’ placed an order for the M4 MacBook Air, with Apple canceling that order and replacing an M5 MacBook Air in its stead. Based on these practices, we’re confident that other buyers will experience the same outcome, so if you’re one of those impatient customers who hastily ordered any M4 models, only to be met with the same experience mentioned above, let us know in the comments.
Also, if you’ve yet to pre-order Apple’s latest M5 family of Macs, these machines start from $1,449 on Amazon and can be configured all the way up to an M5 Max sporting an 18-core CPU, 32-core GPU, 36GB unified memory, and a 2TB SSD.
