M3 Ultra running Cyberpunk 2077: Ultimate Edition

Cyberpunk 2077: Ultimate Edition just recently launched for the Mac, and in a nutshell, it is an exceptionally demanding title to run, even more so if you feel bold enough to enable ray tracing or even path tracing. Fortunately, these additional features can easily be tackled by the M3 Ultra, with its 80-core GPU recently tested in the new game to see how the fastest Apple Silicon fares. In short, it churns out some impressive results with path tracing enabled, with Cyberpunk 2077: Ultimate Edition’s graphics settings set to its maximum supported values.

With the help of AMD’s Frame Generation implementation, M3 Ultra can maintain an average 50FPS in Cyberpunk 2077: Ultimate Edition

On X, Max Weinbach was kind enough to showcase what his M3 Ultra-powered Mac with an 80-core GPU and 512GB of unified RAM was capable of outputting when running Cyberpunk 2077: Ultimate Edition. At the 2,560 x 1,440 resolution, with Apple’s MetalFX set to ‘Auto,’ path tracing enabled, and every other visual setting set to the max, the results show an average of 50.64FPS, with the maximum framerate reaching 59.99FPS. Keep in mind that enabling path tracing in this game can practically tank your performance by half, which is why it is recommended to have a powerful configuration.

This was probably the reason why CD PROJEKT RED did not enable ray tracing or path tracing by default on any Apple Silicon Mac, as it would impact performance. However, keep in mind that as capable as the M3 Ultra is, it could not have obtained these results if it were not for AMD’s FSR 3.1 Frame Generation implementation, but these images do not mention the input lag recorded during this test. An average framerate of 50.64FPS with Frame Generation enabled could indicate that without the feature, Cyberpunk 2077: Ultimate Edition might only be running at half that value.

Of course, those who want to experience the same performance and visual settings on a Mac when running Cyberpunk 2077: Ultimate Edition should remember that it will cost you dearly. After all, the base M3 Ultra configuration with a 32-core CPU, 60-core GPU, and 96GB of unified RAM will land you with a $3,999 bill in the U.S. As much as you need to have an insanely high budget to run this game at a decent framerate on these machines, the latest results highlight the impressive progress that Apple Silicon is making. Our only concern is that the company should work on bringing down the price of its powerful chipsets.
