Apple has big plans for its Mac lineup, and while the company has launched its base M4 chip with the OLED iPad Pro release, we are yet to see the performance levels of the M4 Pro and M4 Max chips. It is now expected that the company will upgrade its entire Mac lineup next year with upgraded chips and possibly the same design for the MacBook models. Today, a prominent analyst has shared details on when users should expect the M4 powered Mac Pro and Mac Studio.
Apple to launch the Mac Pro and Mac Studio with M4 chips next year with major performance gains
Apple debuted the M4 chip with the OLED iPad Pro, which was a surprise for all of us. Since the chip is based on TSMC's 3nm process, the performance gains are ample but close to the M3, which is also built on the same node. Apple did not release a new Mac at its WWDC, which was peculiar given that the company has been offering upgraded hardware in the Summer for quite a while.
Mark Gurman from Bloomberg reports that the company will upgrade its Macs later this year with M4 Pro and M4 Max chips and we can speculate that the analyst is talking about the 14-inch and 16-inch MacBook Pro models. However, the company is expected to launch the M4 variant of the Mac Pro and Mac Studio next year, potentially at a Spring or Summer event.
The updated mini is one of several new Macs coming over the next several months. The company is preparing versions of the iMac desktop and MacBook Pro with chips from the M4 line, also for as early as this year. There are MacBook Airs in development for the spring, and Mac Pro and Mac Studio models are planned for the middle of next year.
It seems that it is going to be a busy year for Apple as the company aims to update its entire Mac lineup in a shorter time frame. Mark Gurman claims that the M4 MacBook Air will be updated with an M4 chip in the Spring of next year, and if past trends are anything to go by, the company will leave the Mac Pro and Mac Studio upgrades for a later day. This means that the Mac Pro and Mac Studio with M4 chips could debut in the Summer of 2025.
The time frame is in line with the company's WWDC event, which is expected to take place in June, when the company will announce iOS 19 and additional updates for its products. We could possibly see dedicated Apple Intelligence features for the devices, as the company has been heavily focusing its AI efforts on its mobile devices for now, which leaves the Mac lineup behind.
We also expect the Mac Studio and Mac Pro to be redesigned, as the devices have featured the same design for a long time. It was noted in the report that Apple will redesign the Mac mini to transform it into a compact machine with powerful hardware. This could be achieved all thanks to the new M4 chip and its low power hungry nature with enhanced performance gains over the current chips.
