Unlike the desktop variant, the laptop variant comes with a lower VRAM size, but leaks are suggesting higher memory capacity for the laptop edition as well.
Lenovo Yoga Pro 7 Leaked Specifications Reveal RTX 5070 Laptop GPU With 12 GB GDDR7 Memory; ASUS Also Lists Laptops With RTX 5070 12 GB Mobile GPU
Despite memory shortages, the leaked listings show that NVIDIA is rumoredly increasing the memory capacity of one of its RTX 50 series cards. On one hand, NVIDIA has been reportedly prioritizing 8 GB RTX 50 series GPUs, but on the other hand, we are seeing some laptop vendors getting a higher VRAM capacity RTX 50 mobile GPU, as spotted by @94G8LA (Huang514613).
Not one, but two listings have hinted towards higher memory capacity on the GeForce RTX 5070 mobile/laptop GPU, which usually ships with 8 GB GDDR7 memory capacity. The first one is the ASUS ROG Strix G16 and G18 listings on Newegg, which list RTX 5070 mobile GPU with 12 GB GDDR7 memory in the specs tab. However, the video memory still lists "8 GB GDDR7". It seems unlikely that such laptops will be available in retail stores with the newer 12 GB VRAM configuration.
Apparently, Lenovo is also preparing its newest Panther Lake-powered Yoga Pro 7 15IPH11 laptop with the "NVIDIA GeForce RTX 5070 GPU with 12GB GDDR7" as can be seen in the listing. We can't confirm whether this is a typo or NVIDIA is really bringing a cut-down GB205 die with a 192-bit bus for the mobile platform as well. Since, the mobile variant brings the GB206 die with 128-bit bus, 12 GB VRAM isn't possible with the existing die.
Unlike the laptop variant, the desktop variant boasts 12 GB memory capacity coupled with a 192-bit memory bus. We usually see downgraded specs for the mobile variants, and the RTX 5070 laptop GPU is no different. The laptop RTX 5070 isn't just downgraded in the memory department, but offers a nerfed GPU die that brings 4608 CUDA cores vs 6144 CUDA cores on the desktop variant.
This alone is a big downgrade that results in much inferior performance, but with an increased memory capacity from 8 GB to 12 GB, the RTX 5070 mobile might be able to perform somewhat better in scenarios where the games need higher VRAM. The overall performance is still going to be somewhat the same in most cases but the newer memory configuration has yet to be confirmed by NVIDIA.
