The weakest link was said to be Apple’s 3D printed hinge, which was the most complicated and likely headache-inducing component of the upcoming flagship due to the rattling sounds it was making. With the company reportedly having bulldozed through these hurdles, it’s a positive sign that it can enter mass production in July.

Based on The Elec’s reporting, the first round of the iPhone Fold’s trial production took place last April, and with the device apparently passing with flying colors, Apple appears confident in preparing its first foldable flagship for mass production. According to previous figures, 3 million OLEDs will be secured for the iPhone Fold as part of the initial batch, but as mentioned above, manufacturing high-end panels wasn’t the most difficult problem faced by Apple.
The 3D printed liquid metal hinge was causing a great bit of concern for the Cupertino firm, and had this problem not been addressed, the iPhone Fold would likely have witnessed a delay. After all, a premium quality hinge not only determines the feel of opening and closing a foldable smartphone, but it also affects the crease’s visibility. Since Apple was adamant to mitigate this crease as much as possible, a great deal of resources were invested in designing one that’s entirely different from what the industry has churned out.
An unnamed official cited by The Elec states that the hinge made sounds after durability tests involving millions of fold-and-unfold cycles, whereas in other assembly processes, tolerances were higher than expected, resulting in an increased defect rate. With the majority of these issues now scaled, the iPhone Fold can comfortably enter mass production and find a place amongst its non-foldable cousins, the iPhone 18 Pro and iPhone 18 Pro Max.
