iPhone 17 Pro Max cooled using an M.2 SSD cooler yields increased stability in 3DMark Steel Nomad Light Unlimited

The vapor chamber added to Apple’s iPhone 17 Pro and iPhone 17 Pro Max is an excellent way to experience sustained performance, which comes in handy when performing taxing workloads for a prolonged period, such as playing AAA games. However, do you know what is even better than this solution? An ‘over the top’ mod that involves strapping not one, but multiple M.2 SSD coolers on the back of the flagship, allowing the device to obtain a 90 percent stability in one of the most taxing benchmark applications, 3DMark’s Steel Nomad Light Unlimited.

Several images show that five M.2 SSD coolers are attached to the iPhone 17 Pro Max, enabling a 21 percent higher score in 3DMark Steel Nomad Light Unlimited

Playing around with the iPhone 17 Pro Max was Reddit user T-K-Tronix, who had an absurd idea of seeing what kind of scores the flagship can achieve with what appear to be five desktop M.2 SSD coolers placed at the back. Keep in mind that the massive copper heatpipes and tiny fans suggest that these cooling solutions were intended to keep PCIe NVMe Gen 5 solid-state drive thermals in check, making it an excessive modification.

So far, only one benchmark test has been performed on the iPhone 17 Pro Max, with the final 3DMark Steel Nomad Light Unlimited results showing an impressive 21.45 percent improvement when comparing the highest scores against the default scores. Of course, in case you have not guessed already, attaching five large coolers to the back of an iPhone 17 Pro Max will yield massive improvements in performance stability, and if you want to see some additional comparisons, those statistics are given below:

These numbers also indicate that whatever AAA game is fired up on the iPhone 17 Pro Max with the cooler attached, we can say with the utmost certainty that there will be little to no performance drops. After all, the A19 Pro’s 6-core GPU already delivers up to a 69 percent framerate improvement compared to the A18 Pro and A17 Pro in titles like Resident Evil 4 Remake, Death Stranding, and Assassin’s Creed Mirage, so this mod will just be the cherry on top.

Now the only problem that remains is securely mounting these multiple M.2 SSD coolers, but if someone is bold enough, we will likely stumble upon something in the near future. Will you try something like this? Let us know in the comments.
