A leaker claims that Apple's forthcoming iPhone 17 Pro models will support shooting up to 8K video recording, which will be a major step up from the current 4K resolution on the iPhone 16 lineup. Apple has always been the king of video recording on a smartphone, and it would not be wrong to presume that the company is planning to take its capabilities up a notch.
Apple could bring 8K video support to the iPhone 17 Pro models, all thanks to the upgraded 48-megapixel Telephoto camera
According to Fixed Focus Digital, the iPhone 17 Pro models will feature 8K video support, and the device is "something to look forward to." If you are not familiar with it, it was reported last year that the company tested 8K video support on the iPhone 16 Pro models, but for some reason, the technology did not make it to the public. The absence of 8K support on the iPhone 16 Pro models could be due to hardware limitations, but this could not be the story this year.
The main camera and the ultra-wide camera on the iPhone 16 Pro models are both 48 megapixels, leaving the telephoto camera in the dust with only 12 megapixels of resolution. Since 8K video recording requires 33 megapixels, we can safely speculate that the main and ultra-wide lenses were capable of shooting the higher resolution video, but the feature could have been shot down due to the absence of a 48-megapixel telephoto camera.
We have also previously heard that the company is planning to offer an upgraded telephoto camera with a 48-megapixel sensor on the iPhone 17 Pro models. If the company upgrades the telephoto camera to 48 megapixels, we will see 8K video support on the iPhone 17 Pro models.
Even though Apple is taking the lead in video, its rivals have already introduced support for 8K video recording on their flagships, including the Galaxy S25 Ultra and the Pixel 9 Pro series, but the latter does it using upscaling AI. It's true that some content creators prefer 4K video over 8K, but having the ability to shoot in ultra-wide could give them more cropping options while retaining quality.
In February, Mark Gurman also corroborated that Apple is working to enhance its video recording capabilities on the iPhone 17 Pro, suggesting that it aims to move the creators and content creators away from standalone cameras. Apple has been constantly adding more functionality to the iPhone's camera, and this year will be no different. We already have an Action mode, support for LOG video, Cinematic mode, Dolby video recording, and 8K video recording would only be the cherry on top. We will keep you posted with the latest details, so stick around.
