USB-C is now a widely used port in the industry due to its compatibility across multiple devices, along with the faster data processing and transfer speed. Apple has been slowly making the shift from its Lightning port to the more in-trend standard for charging and data transfer. This transition could be seen when the iPhone 15 lineup came out and continued with the iPhone 16 and 16 Pro models. While the company has pivoted in terms of the physical port, the charging speeds still continue to be the same in the newer models.
iPhone 16 and 16 Plus still have USB 2 transfer speed which is the same as the predecessor, marking no significant improvements in performance
The "Its Glowtime" event unveiled some major products, and the iPhone 16 lineup remained in the limelight for users who were glued to the updates coming to the new models. When talking about the latest iPhone 16 series, Apple mentioned the shift it is making to the USB-C port from its Lightning standard in all the new versions rolled out. However, when it came to the charging and data transfer speeds, users were left confused.
Apple, while mentioning the upgrades, talked about the faster USB 3 speeds that are coming with the A18 Pro chip. Viewers were drawing assumptions from the lack of clarity that the company was highlighting an improvement from last year's A17 Pro chip. It was, in fact, a comparison between the A18 Pro chip incorporated in the Pro models and the standard A18 chip reserved for the regular model.
The iPhone 16 and iPhone 16 Plus continue to have the same USB 2 transfer speeds, going up to 480MB/s as its predecessor, while the iPhone 16 Pro and Pro Max feature the USB 3 transfer speed that goes up to 10GB/s, similar to the previous models.
Apple's presentation of the transfer speeds gave the impression of an upgrade, but it basically emphasized the difference between the Pro and the non-Pro models. When you see the technical specifications for the new model, you can confirm that no changes have been made to the data transfer speed of the USB-C port.
Apple continues to bring the USB-C port to other devices, and we can see massive improvements in connectivity and transfer speeds as the trend continues.
