The choices Apple made with the iPhone 16e were not made to please the entire critics and consumer populace. Despite how the majority of people feel about the $599 price tag, the company has at least made battery replacements easier. This is all thanks to a method that currently exists in the iPhone 16 and iPhone 16 Plus, which involves running a low-voltage electrical current through the device to pry the cell off effortlessly. This means less work for Apple’s authorized repair centers, leading to a potentially lower battery replacement cost, assuming it starts aging after a couple of years.

Despite featuring a battery capacity of 3,961mAh, which allows the iPhone 16e to deliver better runtime than any other 6.1-inch iPhone, there will come a time when the cell’s rated endurance starts to reduce as it cannot hold the same amount of charge due to degradation. Previously, Apple made it possible to remove the batteries from its iPhones by including pull-tabs, but with the iPhone 16e, this tiny but crucial feature has been removed in favor of an even more effective method.
This method involves passing a low-voltage current through the battery and the charging port using a 9V battery, USB-C charger, or any other source, with REWA Technology demonstrating how effortless the method is. The battery is popped right off, allowing for the new component to be slotted in its place.
The only possible downside to this approach is that self-tinkerers who wish to replace the iPhone 16e’s battery on their own cannot complete the procedure without specialized equipment, and by forcefully prying the battery, they can risk puncturing it. However, pull tabs can sometimes be ripped too, leaving repair experts to resort to isopropyl alcohol to soften the adhesive holding the battery in place to remove it.
It is reported that the same convenience will be introduced to the iPhone 17 series later this year, which will make battery replacement easier. All that Apple now needs to do is transition to silicon-carbon batteries.
