Apple reportedly prepping 90 million iPhone 16 units for 2024

The iPhone 16 family is said to feature four models, with Apple said to be working on various upgrades for each one of them. Likely anticipating high demand, the latest report claims that the technology giant is engaged with its suppliers, targeting an initial shipment of 90 million units. Despite analysts believing that the upcoming smartphone range will not sell well due to lackluster features, the latest figure is 10 percent higher than the number of iPhone 15 units that Apple was estimated to have shipped in 2023.

New report states that Apple Intelligence will be seen as a critical factor for customers picking up the iPhone 16

With the announcement of Apple Intelligence, an iPhone with a capable Neural Engine and a minimum of 8GB RAM can run generative AI features, bringing in a host of features and experiences for users. Since the entire iPhone 16 family is said to feature 8GB RAM as standard, future buyers will not just have the flexibility to open up various applications in unison but also get more out of the device regarding on-device AI capabilities. This would be one reason why a Bloomberg report states that Apple has informed its suppliers about its intended target of ordering 90 million iPhone 16 units for this year.

However, a separate report stated that Apple has ordered 100 million A18 chipsets for its upcoming series. For those who forgot, a previous leak stated that this SoC will be found in all iPhone 16 models, though it is likely that the ‘Pro’ models will be treated to a higher-binned part with better specifications. Since there are varying shipment reports provided about the latest models and no concrete evidence as to which one checks out, we will remain patient while accurate statistics come through. We have also not learned how many units of each iPhone 16 version will make up Apple’s 90-million shipment target.

However, given that the iPhone 16 Pro is said to ship with the same tetraprism camera upgrade as the iPhone 16 Pro Max, we could see increased shipments for the smaller version. The more affordable price and similar optics hardware should give customers much-needed encouragement to warrant an upgrade. The California-based giant typically unveils new models in the second week of September, so we will wait for the announcement and keep our readers in the loop.
