It was previously reported that Apple will be moving away from stainless steel to a titanium finish with the launch of the iPhone 15 Pro models. While titanium offers a wide range of benefits, one of the major advantages is that it is lighter in contrast to stainless steel. There is no doubt that the latest iPhone models are heavy compared to the competition, and the company wants to change this approach. With the new titanium finish, Apple is aiming to reduce the weight of the iPhone 15 Pro models.

The titanium finish on the iPhone 15 Pro models would only contribute a little to make the devices lighter overall

We have previously reported that the iPhone 15 Pro models will come with a grade 5 titanium finish. What this means is that the devices will be more durable and lighter than the current iPhone 14 Pro models with a stainless steel frame. The potential weight of the iPhone 15 Pro and iPhone 15 Pro Max against the iPhone 14 Pro models has been shared online, highlighting what you should expect from the devices. By the look of it, using a titanium finish does not offer a major weight difference.

9to5mac has shared details on the weight of the forthcoming iPhone 15 Pro models, highlighting how much impact titanium would have on the weight. The weight is compared against the iPhone 14 Pro models, showing how titanium compares to stainless steel. As you can see, the iPhone 15 Pro will be lighter than the iPhone 14 Pro, coming in at 191 grams against 206 grams. The iPhone 15 Pro Max will weigh 221 grams against 240 grams of the iPhone 14 Pro Max.

While titanium is lighter than stainless steel, the weight difference is not as huge as you might have expected. Since Apple is upgrading the iPhone 15 Pro with faster internals and upgraded camera hardware, it could add extra weight to the device as well. Additionally, it was previously reported that the iPhone 15 Pro models will house bigger batteries, which will further increase the weight of the device. Henceforth, stainless steel is not the only factor that contributes to the weight of the device.

Take note that these are mere speculations at this stage, as the final word rests with Apple. We would have to wait for the devices to hit the shelves to really know how much lighter the flagship models are. This is because the company will not announce the weight of the device on stage. Apple will potentially announce the iPhone 15 lineup on September 12, according to Mark Gurman, alongside the new Apple Watch Series 9 and upgraded Apple Watch Ultra.
