In addition to being the only model from Apple this year to feature a periscope zoom lens, one tipster has stated that the iPhone 15 Pro Max will also take advantage of a new 48MP Sony sensor. This unit is said to be larger than the main camera of the iPhone 14 Pro Max, so let us discuss those details here.

Apple to use Sony’s IMX903 for the iPhone 15 Pro Max; sensor size bigger than the iPhone 14 Pro Max’s 1/1.28-inch camera

2022 was the year Apple made a gigantic leap with the camera hardware, switching to a 48MP camera for the iPhone 14 Pro and iPhone 14 Pro Max. For this year, Ice Universe predicts that while the maximum camera resolution of the new flagship will be the same, Apple is said to incorporate the more advanced Sony IMX903 48MP unit.

In his tweet, the tipster writes that the main sensor will be closer to 1-inch in dimensions, but not quite, as it will still be smaller than the camera present in the newly launched Xiaomi 13 Ultra. The sensor size of the iPhone 15 Pro Max’s main camera is said to measure 1/1.14 inches, which is slightly bigger than the 1/1.28 inches belonging to the iPhone 14 Pro and iPhone 14 Pro Max.

This change in dimension suggests that the rear camera bump of the iPhone 15 Pro Max will be larger this year, as shown in earlier renders of the iPhone 15 Pro, meaning that the iPhone 14 Pro Max cases will likely not fit in this year’s flagship. Of course, most of our readers know that having a bigger sensor has inherent benefits, as even in low-light conditions, a larger camera will let more light through, capturing more detail.

Add the periscope lens feature, which can reportedly support up to a 6x zoom, and you have an extremely capable camera system. Apple has always been complemented by reviewers by using a powerful combination of hardware and software in its iPhones, and we are expected to see the same pairing from the iPhone 15 Pro Max when the flagship launches later this year.
